Chestnut variety is in sync with McDill here in Italy.
Sometime they both also flower in December but it's too cold here so they never produce.

The red one taste like sweetened almonds, I loved them, hope the yellow taste the same.
Don't know if you have sweetened almonds there, they looks like this:

You can get the red one from Fabio Maio, I think you already know his nursery.

Nope, no flower yet :(
Mine is yellow too, from seeds from Spaugh from this forum. Had many seedling, but I brought them in too late, some storm killed all of them except this one which was already safe at home because it was the most vigorous.
I think the temps in the greenhouse are too high, and although it does grow well it doesn't flower.  Maybe in autumn I'll get fruit.
The acerola did the same too, it dropped all the flowers once the hot weather kicked in, but the plant still grow vigorously. I can move the Acerola outside, but the Muntingia is planted in the greenhouse. I plan to put some sprinkler inside to keep the temps low and insert a fan to move the air outside.
I never tasted the yellow, had 2 red one from a nursery which I loved, but I killed one each year that's why this is in the greenhouse.
I will air layer the branch and move them outside next year while safekeeping the mother plant.
Don't put them in the ground if you have clay soil, I thought since it has roots so vigorous it wouldn't have problem with clay, but the one I bought last year and planted in ground didn't grow at all, while the first one from the same nursery was kept in a big vase with sandy soil and grew at the same speed as the current one.

Mutingia calabura var. Yellow fruit

Give it a much much much much much bigger pot.
Here is my 1 year seedling of yellow muntingia, almost 3m with 6cm trunk at the base.
It was around 70-80cm 2 months ago at home, now it's inside the greenhouse in a raised bed.

A trick that some nursery use to avoid sprouts on the rootstock is to cover the rootstock with something like a plastic tube.
The less light the rootstock receive the lower chances it will make buds.

Yes from Thailand. I never had any problem with this seller. Plants are not sheap but are very good and arrive fast and on very good conditions. My red ivory mango arrived on perfect conditions...

How long does it take from Thailand to Portugal?
Here normally it takes around 3 weeks, most of the time spent in Italy passing from one warehouse to another, frozen in customs where luckily they rarely check things from Thailand.

Hi, I bought it on ebay. This is different than NDM. They have a purple NDM variety
From Thailand? I doubt it will arrive safely now with the covid slowing down all shipments. Good luck anyway.

Very cool, looks like a red version of Nam Dok Mai.
Where have you bought it?

I don't understand, as long as the tracking shows that the package has been shipped the seller has finished its job.
You know the risks of buying seeds and the seller can't be held responsible for anything regarding the shipment.
I could understand if the seeds arrived in a timely manner but rotted midway due to bad packaging, but this is not the case, so why complain?
I lost a couple of months ago around 100usd of cutting, should I have opened a claim for something the seller had no fault?
I simply told the seller nicely and he agreed to send me again by only paying the shipping cost. By acting rudely you won't gain anything and only pisses the other party.

This is an excellent time to ship corms, but if they are sent too wet, they may rot midway.
It's better if they dry out than if they start rotting, I had many corms start rotting and unable to stop the rot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: how cold hardy are these guavas?
« on: May 20, 2020, 11:40:34 AM »
Thank you very much for the info, do you remember at what temps where they exposed when they died?
Like most tropicals I grow, they don't die after a single night of cold, after all we only go to -3 few night, but they die because they cannot stand a prolonged period of cold.
Even Muntingia Calabura outside have no problem handling some night at -3, but if you leave it the whole winter it will die eventually.
In fact Cas Guava has around 2 cm of green cambium at the base, only on one side the side not exposed to the wind.
I doubt it will recover however, probably will continue rotting down even if we have almost summer weather since 1 month.
Many times however if you manage to get the plants to pass the first winter in ground it will suffer less the next winter, such is the case for example of my malaysian red guava, that was burned down to 3-4cm from the ground last year where the wood was around 3cm, while this year it didn't even burn 8mm wood and we had considerably more cold nights.

The first two died to me, I'm roughly zone 9a.
The first was pretty thick, almost 3cm the second around 1m so maybe an older tree should have no problem or mine was just a weak one, I read it should be pretty cold hardy.
Even with Guava I had some small one survive and big one die, so they are quite variable.
Cas guava should probably need zone 10.

I got 4 seeds last Fall and they are sitting in damp vermiculite and nothing so far?
I was told to cut the seed coat off and it would germinate?
Has anyone ever done this?
I guess I should experiment with one
I broke mine with a hammer and it did germinate in a week roughly.
Must be careful as it's easy to use too much force and damage the seed.

Hi Luis, your collection is expanding rapidly!
Where have you got the syzygium samarangense?

Do you think your friend can sell some seeds of the red avocado?
Hello my friend how are you? I buy it on ebay from Thailand... i can give you the link if you want.
You can contact him here on forum. I buy the avocado seeds here!  ;D

By the way do you think you can help me or know how i can get some good fruit passiflora varieties? I just want some cuttings...
I'm fine thanks. The situation is not as bad as the media says.
Oh from Thailand, flights are regular in Portugal right now? Here postage is much slower, so impossible to get it safely now, and normally it takes 2-3 weeks from Thailand to Italy.
I only got Passiflora Frederick, Fata confetto and Maliformis but haven't tried the fruit yet.
Had a very vigorous Edulis x Colvilli which was making tasty fruits, but it did die with the burian and the next I bought was never as vigorous as the first, little growth and died easily.

Try Fabio's Nursery, last year he had some:
http://www.piantetropicali.com/tropicalsicily/home.php
He just send plants to Italy.

He sends also here, he just replied.. But the only the shipping cost he said would be 45€
Hi plants are usually quite big, even 2m in some cases, you can ask the size.
Even in Italy often I pay 35 eur from him.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Anyone selling Lucuma scions?
« on: March 27, 2020, 02:54:33 PM »
Hi Nelio,
I hope everything is fine there too.
Here the situation has been greatly exaggerated by the media, we are using different method to calculate both infection and deaths than the rest of the world.
The only real thing is the hospital that are collapsing because of the fear they instilled in everybody they made the virus spread more than if they did nothing.
There will be more deaths by families going bankrupt than what the virus did.

I can get scions from 2 different types, but only after Covid 19 pandemia is over.
For now I have about 200 seeds, if you or someone else is interested.

Hi Nelio, my plants are finally ready too. Once all this has ended I would like some Molina scions.
Thanks!

Stay safe everybody.

My first Sete Capote finally sprouted after around 1 year, Yay!

These things are slow, I thought they were dead by now.
Would like to order more seeds, but right now postage suck in Italy due to Coronavirus, already two packages missing in 2 months.

21
Strange, my order has always been quick.
He must have some issues.

22
What's the trick to germinate them?
I've read it takes few days but mine are not moving yet, it's almost 2 months.
I'm not sure I just plant them
How long did it take you to see something move?
