Oak mulch safe for fruit trees?
« on: May 08, 2013, 11:03:16 AM »
The local tree guy has just cut down some live oaks and silk oak trees. He has offered the mulch to me. Is it safe to mulch around my fruit trees using oak mulch? I seem to recall reading somewhere a while ago that avocado trees did not do well if they were planted around areas where Oaktree's were once living. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Brad

oak wood is a good wood for fungi species to colonize, i wonder if that may be a risk?

I used tree trimming mulch that often has live oak mixed in and I've never had any problems

Have 50+ avocados planted where oaks once flourished, then Eucalyptus heavily planted.  No problems.

I use it around mangos with no issues. You might check the UF IFAS site about avocado mulching. Oaks are known to carry pathogens detrimental to some fruit trees like citrus.
