Good evening-

I am interested in growing a Ficus macrophylla but am having a hard time finding a source.  If anyone knows of a source that would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Axilo Mix 5

Interested in using Axilo Mix 5 for foliar application.  Is there a conversion of use on a smaller scale?  For instance, amount of product mixed per gallon.

I am hoping to be able to purchase an Amber or Berry jack seedling from someone.  I was a little late in asking Mike for seeds.  If anyone has any extras please mail me.  Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit and spice park visit 5/23
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:44:07 PM »
Went to the Fruit/spice park today.  Early in the season for most stuff there but I think I made out ok.  Made it to the row of jab's and wanted to find the white jaboticaba.  I told my wife to look for the jab with yellow leaves, and sure enough it stood out.  Lo and behold, there was one fruit left on the tree.  And it happened to fall on the ground right in front of me!

For me the big hit was the Redlands white sapote.  From afar I saw some man gorging on fruit beneath a tree and figured it was a good one to check out.  Upon arrival the guy looked like a scene from walking dead, only this time he was feasting on white sapote not human.  He had sapote all over his face and shirt and commented that he forgot his knife, haha.  Well after one bite, even though I had brought my knife I looked the same as the other guy.  It was sooo good.  There was also Bonita springs which was good but not quite as good as the Redlands.

I then feasted on many mangos.  Some I recognized, some I didn't.  The clear winner for today was the Spirit of 76.  Absolutely delish.

I then headed to Pine Island for a first visit.  I was looking for a couple things they didn't have so I drove over to Lara Farms.  Julian spent nearly 1.5 hrs giving me a tour.  Along the way I collected a bunch of mangos and mamey fruit.  I also picked up a Ross sapote, haysa sapodilla, green sapote and a gefner atemoya tree, all for $15 each.

I am stuffed with a ton of mangos I need to go through!!!  On a side note, I had a Pineapple pleasure from zills that was incredible.  The whole family loved it, probably tied with Edward, if not a touch better.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ns1 seedling jack first flowering
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:14:23 PM »
In August 2009 I planted a seed from an NS1 fruit.  I now see two flowers, which I believe are one male and one female.  I am hopeful that it will hold fruit this year, time will tell.  I planted a seedling versus a grafted variety at the time thinking it would be more cold hardy.  I live in Pasco County about 35 miles north of Tampa so cold is an issue.

The tree stands about 10' tall by about 7' wide.  Here are some

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooibos seedling
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:02:00 PM »

I know its not much now but I have 2 rooibos seedlings coming up.  I have read that they have low germination rates.

I am trying to have a diverse collection of 'tea' plants.  I have yerba mate, ton of camelia sinesis, rosa rugusa and roselle.  I also have jasmine sambac for jasmine tea.  Any other suggestions?

Anyone growing either of these, or have any information on them?  I have a friend in Argentina that just sent me seeds of these plus some I know a little more about, like Myrcianthes pungens, Eugenia pyriformis, Eugenia speciosa.  Comments on any are welcome, thanks.

Oscar-

Do you think potassium chlorate could stimulate stubborn jaboticaba's into fruiting?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Foliar Feeding
« on: February 04, 2012, 01:15:28 AM »
Foliar feeding was brought up on the Organic Gardening post.  I was curious the various products people have had used with good results.  I have always used the Southern Ag Citrus Spray for foliar feeding.

What products, organic or not, are you using?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold Hardy Avocado's
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:02:11 PM »
Curious if anyone is growing the cold hardy Avo's like fantastic, Joey, Lila ect?

I am growing the Fantastic.  It has been flowering for about a month, but I've been cutting off the flowers to get some good growth this year.  I am particuarily interested in tasting reviews too.

The fantastic allegedly can handle down to 15f.  The record for my area is 18f.  This year I only got to 24f once, 28f once and haven't seen below freezing since.  Any reports on cold hardiness?

Hi Murahilin-

I saw your question posted to my introduction reference the Minnie Royal and Royal Lee cherries.  For those that are not aware, I am in Central Fla about 30 minutes north of Tampa, Fl.  I get on average 200-300 chill hours.

The cherries were planted in January of last year on Colt rootstock.  In one years growth they grew from 3' with no lateral branching to over 9' that I had pruned twice to encourage more lateral branching rather than just upright growth.  I did recently prune them back down to 6' as I want to train them to stay in the 10' well branched range.

I was amazed at how care free they were this year.  No disease/fungus issues that I moderately expected.  This winter was very warm, only going below freezing twice.  That said, the buds are all beginning to swell, so I think they are taking the hot winter quite well.  It should be noted that in mid-December I exfoliated all remaining leaves by hand, as is common with apples in warm climates.

I am hoping for flowers/fruit this year, but have never grown a northern sweet cherry so I am not sure how early flowering is expected.  Once they push out either a flush or flowers I will update with some photo's.
