Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: worm castings
« on: March 19, 2017, 08:25:51 PM »
For any members around SW Florida, the millipedes are invaluable.  As far as worm casting these buggers are prolific.  After 2 years here I hardly have any worms, but these seem more adapted to this sandy area. They break down all the mulch I bring in at a terrific rate. I never realized how great they are for gardens until I moved here. Don't discount them they're amazing.

Shipping was $37 Fedex from Hawaii to Florida for 5 plants

Hawaiian tropical nursery is selling araca boi. These arrived today from Hawaii. Steve Starnes has probably the best mail order plants I've ever seen.  Packaged great, 3rd perfect order.  Don't know if he's on the forum .  http://www.store.hawaiiantropicalplants.com/Tropical-Fruit-and-Vegetable-Plants_c3.htm?page=1

Top tropicals just got in white Ilama trees. $85 for about a 2' tree. Pricy, but I also give up on the seeds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question about effects of miracle fruit

It makes marginal fruit taste incredible.  It's more than just amping the flavor & removing acidity. Phalsa and unripe mulberry taste like hard candy.  Starfruit becomes mouthwatering. Malt vinegar tastes like maple syrup. Definitely worth having .

I got to try these earlier this year at Top Tropicals.  Only had a small taste but reminded me of water chestnut in texture. I only tried a small piece. I was already loaded down but this is definitely back on the list to plant!

Anyone have a guess on what temperatures these will take? It seems that they grow in quite a broad range. Is anyone growing it in the ground? I'd love to see pictures of any trees at any age. Information and pictures are scarce.

Definitely not canistel...this is a softer seed & growing a bunch of canistel now. I had plants from all over the country & from other countries, so really could be many things. Just have never seen a seed with this bright yellow under the outer shell.

Anyone have any idea what this could be? Repotted & planted dozens of plants before finding this in the mix.

Looking for Maprang if anyone know where to find seedlings or grafted trees.

I have 6 varieties planted. All seem very vigorous.  It only got to 40 here last year, but many are supposed to be very cold hardy. No soil amendments and are massive.  The one that's almost 2 would consume the house if I let it.

48
Passionflower is a beast here. Doesn't even blink at the heat & attracts a lot of pollinators. Incredibly vigorous, tastes great.
