Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these lembu (wax apple, rose apple) ripe?

Do not yield to the touch, are tough, I imagine they are not ripe, no?

The guy who tried them said they have little flavor now...

Hello, the organic store in my town got jack fruit! so I'm very excited ... but do not know if it is ripe or not, how could I  know it?

On the other hand, It released some latex and it is very very sticky: what is the best way to clean the latex of your hands? alcohol? Fruit should be opened wearing gloves? is it the latex too toxic ?

It weighs 15 lbs (6.7 kilos)

Great fruits, thanks for the info, at Misiones they use to call uvaia to the uvajay too, but I think they are very different, I hope to try ubajays soon (and I hope they dont taste like onions)

did you tasted it?

2280
All of them? I wonder what is my variety/cultivar (e. pyriformis), as it's well balanced acid/sweet, so I would not say it's the acid type, but maybe the sweet type

2281
I tried new ones from today: THEY WERE SOOOO GOOD! like a navel orange+apricot, juicy, sweet and acid (more acid than the first one, and sweeter), so I think this is one of the best fruits I know. You can eat all with skin and spit the seed, really great fruit.

Maybe the first one I tried was overripe

Yes it is a fruit fly. It is the Mediterranean fruit fly.

oh, great, thanks folks

now I know what is she...

I have to tell that the traps worked very fine: no uvaia was infected by the fruit fly Ceratitis capitata.

About guabijus (myrcianthes pungens): the tree produced maybe 400 fruits or so, and just only 20 of them had worms, so it was a success!

Traps made with PET bottles pierced and painted with yellow spray, I put orange juice with water, but yellow food coloring is also used and some vinegar so the liquid does not rot. The fly enters the trap and can not get out, drowns in the liquid.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / guabiju season
« on: January 05, 2015, 08:02:26 AM »
Hi all

Guabijus are ripening ok and they are tasty now (you should wait 2 or 3 days since they are black and you think "they are ripe enought"... but wait 2 or 3 days for full flavour)

I prefer to sell seeds, because since 2014 the customs in Argentina seem to get 50% of packages you mail here... so... if you want to buy some seeds:

Guabiju (myrcianthes pungens) (january 2015)
25 seeds 60 USD
50 seeds 100 USD
100 seeds 180 USD
200 seeds 340 USD

Shipping cost: 10 to 15 USD

Oh, yes Cassio, I was talking about eugenia pyriformis, I hope to try those species some day... didnt knew at all eugenia beauperina, I dont find anything on the net, can you tell us more about "her"?

2288
I was drinking an orange gatorade and then I realized uvaia is very similar to that drink!

2289
I had a very nice time watching the video and I am so grateful both of you are in this forum! My only pitangatuba is just 5cm tall :S

2290
Nice report!

Congrats on your first uvalha

The taste will improve I'm sure...the first fruits are usually not the best.

(Btw, how cold does your area get?  I want to plant my grafted uvalha, but my new location can get quite cold, I'm thinking any colder than 23F might really hurt the tree.)

Thanks, I liked the fruit a lot and I would eat it everyday.. but I think it could be sweeter than this.

In my backyard, uvaia got -3ºC (26ºF) without damage at all (neither sete capotes or pitangas, but guavas lost all their leaves and tamarillo almost died with some frost protection!). I think it should resist -6º C fine (21ºF)

Where is your new location? (oh, I see.. FEMA region IV)

This is the final report:

I took the only fruit so far that gave the tree at my parents' house, he said the smell was like a peach, but my mother said that it reminded her of popcorn (agree with both), and my wife commented that reminds a yogurt (also agree). Then, the aroma is like a cross between caramel, peach, yogurt, popcorn ...

When I returned home, I cut it in two: It came out much juice! That was nice. The taste was well balanced between acidity and sweetness, now I know that I should not have the "acid" variety, then it must be the sweet type.

The pulp was not firm -perhaps it was overripe-, being juicy and with some fibers that do not bother.

The taste reminded me of a tangerine. The red pitanga (eugenia uniflora) also reminds me mandarins (though. when underripe it has that annoying resinous flavor), and since both are eugenias, I should not be so wrong. The flavour of our e. uniflora is stronger than this e. pyriformis.

Maybe a little bland: I expected more acid and sweeter, but I can not blame anything to this fruit and I would it many of them per day: it has the quality of fruits sold in any grocery store (and the sweetness of a guava). Keep in mind this is the first fruit of the tree (the next should be better), and that in 2 or 3 months there will be 3 more to try.

2292
3 days later, today, It just fell of the tree! the aroma/perfume is so great, just like caramel or caramel+apricot.

the small hairs on the skin (like peach) of the fruit make it very pleasant to handle and have it between your fingers ... must have weighed 20 grams, do not know. Later I will cut and I'll take some photos ... and of course, eat it.

2293
Thanks friends, it is quickly becoming orange,

it's such a beautiful fruit that I want to eat now. It does not emits an odor that I could feel ... at least I did not realize ... the tree is beside a plum tree whose fruits were attacked by fruit flies (but then I did a trap and it's working very good) and are rotting in the ground, so the smell of the environment is rotten plum.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / uvaia fruiting for the first time!
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:20:43 PM »

Had not seen this fruit until today, which went to water the plant and see if there were newly fruits on the last flowers ... but this larger fruit is of an earlier flowering of about 1 or 2 months ago, is the only current fruit from that past bloom ... fruits that are taking shape now are smaller, of course.

I hope to try it for the first time soon (maybe 2 months?)!

They are pear shaped and I dont know if would be the acid or the sweet type...

2297
If I should say what I eat everyday, it would be:

banana
nut
apple
grape
orange

but if you speak of fruits cultivated in the garden or rare fruits I rarely find in some stores:

lychee
sete capotes
guaviyu
black surinam cherry
cherimoya

Hi Dangermouse,

The Rio Cherry has about the same cold tolerance as the Surinam Cherry! I think it will grow very well in your place!

I'm currently growing 2 Grumichamas in large pots and in about 4 years they will start to produce!

I have never grown Rio's in a pot!

Adam, is the expert on pot culture!  Maybe, he has fruited Rio in a pot!

Do you know the grumichama cold hardiness?
