Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Deer suck
« on: July 17, 2020, 01:19:36 PM »
I had a raised test-bed for carefully babying unique plants from seeds or cuttings - several uncommon varieties of Goumi, Haskap, & Hardy Kiwi... and other unique things like Bear Garlic & special strawberries like Mara-des-Bois.  One morning, I got up and walked to my test bed to find two big hoof prints where a deer had stood on its hind legs and placed its front legs apart widely in the bed.  All the tops of my plants were gone, and were replaced with a big heap of vomit in the middle of the bed.  I guess the exotic cuisine was too complex for his local taste buds.

Anyway, fast forward and I have a freezer full of deer meat from a bow kill in the back of the yard.  I like to think it's the same one.

Seems like the right forum to me!  I grow lots of peppers.  That's a looooong list!  I read that Aji Mango are good but none of mine sprouted!  What are your favorite peppers / which have the most unique flavor -- limited to mild or up to ~Jalapeno heat or a little hotter.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Maypops (in zone 6a/5)?
« on: July 17, 2020, 02:18:37 AM »
I'm in zone 7b/8a, and Maypops are garbage.  They die completely, not just to the ground.  Meanwhile, all the other zone 8b/9a stuff that's supposed to die comes back just fine.

I am very interested in cuttings of Salmonberry, Tayberry, Boysenberries, and others. On a bit of a berry adventure right now. Oh and HoneyBerry. I guess they are blueberry-like in the honey suckle family. If anyone has any available let me know.

Sorry for the double post. I put my thread in the wrong sub forum initially.

Pssst, Salmonberry isn't worth it ;)
Thimbleberry on the other hand...

Sign me up too if they're tasty :) I've yet to eat a maypop.

No need to clean them for me!

My Maypop died over winter!  All of my Zone 7+8 plants were just fine, pretty disappointed.  If anyone has seeds this year from some decent fruit I'd love to buy them :)
