Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit in Fort Lauderdale
« on: March 24, 2017, 09:05:08 PM »
I'll be in Fort Lauderdale in April and I'm wondering if there are some places I should visit to try fruit (even if it's just a mango besides tommy atkins) I'm also wondering about nurseries for orchids or carnivorous plants and botanical gardens beside the Fairchild gardens since I don't know of any others.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse humidity
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:36:09 PM »
Currently my greenhouse is under construction, but before I put in the humidity system I'm wondering if 75% humidity (that's what's best for orchids in general) is enough for ultra tropicals? The heat will be different since some will live on heat mats (in addition to the heater) but the humidity will be uniform.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia's "what's growing on" thread
« on: January 26, 2017, 10:13:34 PM »
Bad puns! But in all seriousness I figured I'd make a thread to showcase what new things have happened in relation to my fruit trees and post regular updates

Here is the first of my Natal plum seeds I collected to germinate:

Passionfruit germinating like crazy:

Guarana seedlings:

This Annona seed which I believe is soursop has rooted:

Not much to see, but under here are some sprouted red hybrid jaboticaba seeds

Last but not least are these 2 Surinam cherry plants I received for only 6 dollars from eBay:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What tropicals would survive outdoors here?
« on: January 15, 2017, 01:44:12 PM »
So far I've documented these growing, with varying levels of vigor
Loquats- grow very fast here
Feijoas - grow very fast here
Guavas - grow very fast here
Lemon & strawberry guavas - grow very fast here
Citrus - grows incredibly well
Jackfruit - seedlings freeze and loses leaves in winter, grow back when it warms up
Avocados - not the best place as they are somewhat rare. I know of only a few trees in the area
Bananas (multiple cultivars) - grow pretty well, I see them frequently
Kiwi - I've seen a few vines around
Passionfruit - vigorous evergreen grower

There are probably others but these come to mind
