Garcinia sp. "de bico"
« on: April 01, 2024, 07:01:46 AM »
Hi everyone.

I'm looking for  Garcinia sp. "de bico" information on the internet and I find very poor things.

Has anyone grown this variety?

Mainly I would like to know if it is self-fertile or if I need to have males and females.

At what annual temperatures can it be maintained?  Does it withstand temperatures of 50-60°F?

I would also like to know what it tastes like and what it compares to.

 Thank you! ;)

I think it may be the same as what I referred to in past posts as Ecuadorian for of G. macrophylla and I posted some pics of fruit. It has sections inside and is large but the ones I posted were more orange and larger than de bico pics you can google. The tree was around 30 years old sourced from northern South America. The lobe tree was bearing well.

Thank you very much for your answer.
I found some seeds on Bellamy and other websites, which are imported from Brazil.  Should I think about g.  macrophylla, too, although it does not come from Ecuador?
The good side is that it handles my 60-70°F winters well (some days in the 50s).  I'm not sure if macrophylla is self-fertile.  I read in your post about a single tree bearing fruit, so there is hope.  What do you think about this?
Everything you say in your posts looks very good.
Cheers :)

The brazilian macrophylla is nowhere near as good or big fruited. South east Asian species generally are not as cold hardy as South American species from the same latitude. Trying to figure if American Garcinias are dioecious or monoecious or both within a species and what the sex ratios are seems to be like trying to rope the wind.

G. de Bico seems to be a fast grower here, as far as garcinias go.

Thank you so much.
I have to think about whether to start growing a new Garcinia.  Looks like a nice new hobby, shame it takes up space too hahaha

I am a student of fitting trees in and that;s why people call me a space cadet.
