Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Nut trees for the south
« on: February 16, 2022, 12:18:51 PM »
Anyone got any dormant southern pecan, black walnut, or other nut varieties that will work in the FL panhandle? Like young seedling trees.

I have a good handful of golden Dorsett apple cuttings I could take. Definitely would trade for any other low chill apple, pears, Asian pear, persimmon, or Mulberry varieties I don't have.

Didn't think about him. Did meet the guy once at a permaculture event in which he was doing grafting tutorials. I'll check his website.  Thanks!

Really want to get some jujube trees going on my homestead. None of the ones I got in the past made it. Suppose moving root runners or seedling trees while dormant is best. Root runners of already mature trees would be ideal but anything works. Hit me up!

Many germinated seeds available. Germinated seeds 4 for $1. Minimum order of 16 seeds at $4 plus applicable shipping. Will send usps first class package with tracking in a box to prevent damages to seeds. Limited time offer only available until seeds are too far into sprouting. I'll plant whatever is left unsold and offer seedling trees down the road.

Haven't got any replies myself yet. Best of vibes to the both of us finding some seed.

Got my first crop of brown select satsumas this year. Bought the tree at just fruits and exotics 2 to 3 seasons ago. They were pretty good but not the absolute greatest. As the tree settles in better they should get better I'd think.

A seed grown Satsuma in a friend's yard was epically good. First time it fruited this year. Said the tree had been there a long time. It's definitely worth trying to propagate this one. Planted seeds but I'll try grafting a piece onto a tree in my yard.

Had the covids pretty badly back in July. Beat me up for about 2 weeks and my wife a week or so longer than that. Strange array of symptoms for sure. At a week in I suddenly couldn't breathe one day badly and feared death most of that day and partially for the next 2 days. Toughed it out without hospitalization. I'm more afraid of them than death for various reasons. Did loose smell entirely for about 5 days and taste heavily altered for about the same time frame. Did come back to full normal as it cleared up in general. Others I know have gone months without regaining normal smell and taste and one guy after recovering fully for awhile then all of a sudden certain things smell like an ash tray and gasoline. Otherwise he's all good just those senses messed up.

On a side note thanks to all you whom used your freedom choice to do as you saw fit for yourself but still completely respect others who wouldn't make that same choice for themselves. That's America and that's the freedom of choice and respect we should all share and encourage despite philosophical differences. We need that mentality more than ever right now.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Low chill Asian pear
« on: February 05, 2022, 11:00:50 AM »
Have a nice rootstock grown out from a grafted variety I had bought awhile ago. Even before allowing that rootstock to grow out whatever variety it was on top wasn't doing good at all here. Can't remember what variety I bought. Just a bare root tree bought from a roadside vendor for $10. Now that I got a nice bit of rootstock growth I can cut the other old scion off and graft the rootstock with a better variety for here in the FL panhandle. Preferably a variety with less than 400 chill hours but hopefully  250 or less. Anybody out there got scions available for a low chill Asian pear?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fig tree die back
« on: February 04, 2022, 07:20:23 PM »
Unfortunately no cuttings can be taken. They freeze back to the ground entirely every season. Have come back every season so far though. Nematodes may be a possibility and I'm sure there are many kinds. As far a root knotting nematodes I wouldn't think so. Never pull up anything here with lots of knots in the roots. Not even annual veggies. Carrots often do branch here though for some reason. Other root veggies don't though. When it comes to root knot nematodes when I lived down southward they were horrible but here not so much. Soil is very thick and not sugar sand like a lot of Florida.

Ya it's possible. Perhaps too much fresh growth before winter sets in? I've lost every bit of growth on these three trees for a few seasons now. Comes back from the stump yearly but cannot keep any growth gained through summer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fig tree die back

Does anybody have an idea why a fig tree or in my case three different trees of different varieties keep dying back to the ground in winter? I'm in the FL panhandle so it definitely doesn't get too cold here. However this has happened every year for 3 years. No clue why this would occur when there's other figs in the yard doing fine and all over town. Also two if the three are rooted pieces from local trees that don't freeze or die back. What the heck is up here?

Know there has been others asking but I need to ask too.

Anyways a kind member sent some Wilma avocado seeds that I did plant already. However I would be greatly happy to procure some more seeds from any of the cold hardiest varieties. If anyone out there has some please hit me up! Prefer varieties that can withstand temps of 25F or even better 20F or less. Might as well have cold hardy rootstock for the hardy types I will graft onto them later. It can get into the teens here every so often. Want not to loose any trees if that occurs.

I attempted grafting some rootstock I have now today and will be trying the rest over the weekend. I realized I'm gonna need vastly more rootstock in the future to try again not only to create my own trees but to have some to sell/giveaway down the road too.  I probably didn't do the greatest grafts today so it's possible I will fail and perhaps kill those rootstocks anyways.

Want seeds of varieties:
Opal
Wilma
Brazos Belle
Poncho
Joey
Lila
Fantastic
Mexicola Grande
And/or others of like cold hardiness

Thanks for your help! DG

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting avocado
« on: February 01, 2022, 04:56:35 PM »
Have a few questions about grafting avocado. A generous member sent some scions that I attempted grafting a few today. Tried two cleft grafts on side branches of a larger rootstock and left the top growing tip on that plant as a measure to hopefully keep the tree alive in general if the grafts fail. Would cut the top off later if the grafts are successful. Unfortunately not sure I did a great job but we'll see.

On two other smaller rootstocks I tried to side veneer graft near the bottom of the rootstock. Left the growing tips on the trees also as a measure to not loose the rootstock if the grafts fail. Unfortunately not sure I did too good with these grafts either. Can't get better unless you try right?

That was a general overview of what I tried today for informational purposes as a prelude to my questions. I'm certainly much more experienced and therefore more comfortable with the cleft grafting. I'm not that experienced a grafted nonetheless. I feel the side grafting is likely a better option to success or at the least to save the rootstock if a graft fails. My major question is on my remaining rootstocks should I just cleft graft somewhere on the main trunk of the seedling trees cutting off the main growth tips and hoping for the best? Figure in the event of a failed graft it's more likely the rootstock will die off too right? The rootstock are healthy enough but maybe not the healthiest in the world if you see my implications there. If a were to cut off the main growth tip and still graft above a side branch would that be better? Leave something for the rootstock to photosynthesis with or would the side branch steal too much resources from the scion? Obviously the scion would become the main stem tip though so maybe I'm wrong there??? Would cut the side branch off if the scion was successful. Rather not kill all my rootstock in the event of failures. What's y'alls wisdoms on this? I will attempt grafting the rest of the scions this weekend when I'm off work again and give the time to get some replies from a variety of people.

Thanks for your help! DG

Just got my PCH pads from B2B. Great seller and definitely hooked me up good with extra pads. Other plants with my order were all good too. Highly recommended! Thanks!

Always two sides to a story. I'd be interested to hear Oscar's side of things. It's real easy to create false impressions from one side not actually knowing what in truth may have occurred. There could be a valid reason for both parties to have an issue from opposing views. Or one person is simply in the wrong and is just being overly exaggerative from their side. Nobody likes to admit fault especially these days. Not a whole lot of moral fiber in today's society. Not saying the original poster is in the wrong at all so don't get offended. Just saying we only know your side of things and Oscar hasn't yet defended his side if the story.

I don't think so. Was wondering what happened. No worries at all.

I have the common edible day lily. The tawny orange kind. If you want some let me know. Think it's going dormant right now. Also have the arrowroot and canna edulis rhizome if you want. Maybe my last message didn't come through?

Anyways many of these species I too desire. If anyone has some of these let me know. Would like the yellow edible day lily too. Edible bulb tiger lily has proven hard to find as well as edible hostas(at least those used for good edibility) and dahlias.

Very cool project man! I need to try and make some cane syrup eventually. I usually just chew pieces that get cut off while propagating them. Maybe this coming season I'll have bunches of canes to mess with.
