I have some feedback from a Thai eBay vendor about the fruiting habits of Diospyros decandra, the Gold Apple, for all forum members to share as reproduced below: -
“Both male and female flowers are residing on the same tree.
Fruits have 2 shapes: Flat fruit is born from a male flower that grows to be a false fruit without seeds.
Round fruit is born from a female flower that will produce seeds.
Usually, one tree will have alternate bearing habit with different year. If this year it produces flat fruit, then it will produce round fruit the next year.
However, it happens that some trees come out with flat and round fruit together at the same time.”
The above seems to contradict somewhat with what stated in
http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Diospyros+decandra, which I have quoted in my previous posting on the 7th July. The website said the species is a dioecious, i.e. with either male flowers or female flowers borne on separate trees.
In this connection, we have to do lengthy experiments by ourselves to find out the truth, which might take years.
