Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon fruit trellis guestion
« on: February 14, 2021, 05:51:34 PM »
They grow fine on the fresh concrete. If you are making concrete supports make sure you have plenty of reinforcement through whatever shape you make.

I made my posts out of concrete but my tops using a PVC pipe/cap (same size I had used for the concrete mould) with steel through it to make the frame and cemented for stability on the inside of the pvc post topper.

Here is the only pic I have on my phone but on the less mature posts behind you can see the toppers on the concrete posts.

Lakoocha vs Kwai Muk. If you only planted one, which would it be.

I did find some older comments leaning one way or the other, has anyone had good examples of both?

All my trees are pruned and grown on 15ft/4.6m centres if that matters and climate is sub tropical with minor frosts.

Thanks all.

How do you guys rate pink mamoth and tropic sun compared to Lisa?
On page 48 or the ag guide you will see ratings given for flavour, texture etc. of various cultivars grown commercially here.
http://era.daf.qld.gov.au/id/eprint/1653/5/4keycus.pdf
The information linked to is more than 20 years old and doesn't cover newer varieties.  I wonder how they stack up against these industry standards of 1998 and what percentage of the commercial crop is now devoted to each variety.  Is Tropic Sun mostly a home gardener's variety?

I was answering Brad about Pinks Mammoth and as Gefner and AP are both listed and a point of reference I thought it worth sharing. Tropic sun is supposed to be good but killed mine before fruit :( it was developed for commercial production I believe but don’t know if it ended up being productive enough, it’s pretty low vigour. there are some others coming that are meant to be good to but yet to see them on the shelves.

Bit more info here that’s interesting but more about where they came from/how they were bred rather than flavour.

I can’t compare to Lisa or Tropic sun but the Pinks Mammoth line is fantastic and I rate them well above Gefner and AP as points of reference.

PM is ugly as Sean said (worse with poor pollination I think) so consider that if you care.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Propagating Acerola Cherry

That is a tough one. I seriously get near 100% take with cuttings the width of your finger just stuck in pots out in the open. I take all the leaves off.

I usually avoid the middle of summer and winter but I’m not even sure that matters.

This is what I do and the results/data.

You could use a thicker cloth there if necessary.

I get light frosts most years (very brief here) and it seems the flowers are only damaged at the same point the tree/foliage would be.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Most worthwhile subtropical fruits to grow?

Add sapodilla, canistel, atemoya, bananas, dragonfruit, jaboticaba, all guavas and even star apples depending on what *some degree of frost* means.

I get Minor frost most years here and those all do well. I have jackfruit too and they are mostly ok after the first 2 years.

I protected a lot of it for the first year.I did have some losses of small trees one bad year when I didn’t (coldest recorded temp ever here).

Never had cores in mine like Brad has, that’s a bummer Brad :( . I rate them as a backyard banana.

I see it a lot but I wonder if a lot of the disappointment is due to the hype and other name of ice cream banana. They are fine to good tasting here and productive. My only gripe is having to stake the plant.

Thanks Mike. Have you had Diploglottis australis? Have one as a street tree but never eaten one.

I use chickens and worms (big wheeled garbage bins for the worms).

I used to use a big cage for composting but I was lazy turning it so it took too long and fed the rodents.

My brother has an old tree in what would be the equivalent of 10b or 11a. It fruits, but the fruits are not super great. I don’t know if that’s a product of low chill or just a poor cultivar/seedling.

Acerola is another one that can go way lower (at least -2C here unscathed)

Good to hear Mike and thanks for sharing.

This is by far the most common cultivar is see in nurseries now but I’ve never had one. I grow Maher here.

I don’t know the differences between the species but a friend just gave me these which he called Campomanesia lineatifolia. Just trying to find out more about it and the leaves do look similar. How are the fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dwarf Mango Project
« on: September 12, 2020, 09:28:21 AM »

Issue with Pickering mango seed is at it monoembryonic seed so there never be stable you need find a polyembryonic seed a stable rootstock

That is the idea though. You need variation to find something new. Once you find it grafting gives you the ability to propagate, no need for ‘stability’.

Good luck :) I don’t know how many seeds you’ll need to plant to find something worthwhile but interesting project.
If you're planning to use this rootstock you need to be stable
If not stable you can never guarantee it's going to be a dwarf

Future is talking about a dwarf cultivar not rootstock. Scion can provide the dwarfing characteristic, you don’t need a dwarf rootstock.

Is humidity a factor in pollination? It is with some other trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Land size
« on: August 25, 2020, 04:43:53 PM »
You have heaps of room. You can fit a lot in a small space. I have a bit over half an acre and it keeps me plenty busy. I would love 40 acres but that is for other stuff, the veggie garden and orchard wouldn’t be too much larger.

47
Good to hear you are back Mike mk2! Or is it mk3 now?! :)

Mine is still here and healthy but seemingly grows slower than its neighbours (at least while small). Could be the spot, time will tell! If it doesn’t speed up this could be a very manageable cultivar (similar to my wai chi).

What a whopper! Mamey like haha

I haven’t tried many but I don’t mind black gold.

As Mike said, though there will be some pretty good atemoya around at that time.
