noticed today, all three grafts are pushing.  the hardest part now, is keeping them from getting too hot (or too cold)...and keeping the aphids off the new growth!

Looking good. I wish there were more grafted garcinia were around. I made the mistake of taking mangosteen scions when the new leaves were just about to push last summer in Puerto Rico. Still ended up with 4 out of 8 takes but I'm sure it would have been better with wood that wasn't so close to pushing.

Are these different than achachairu? In PR they seem to call achachairu bakupari.

jsvand,

yes this is different than the achachairu..i think the new brazil fruits book calls achacha, G. humilis!

G. gardneriana is much like the achach, but I believe the fruit is a bit smaller, with a much thinner peel, and smaller seed.

IIRC, you showed me two different types of Gardneriana leaves.  Which leaf shape do you believe to be superior in terms of fruit quality?

I have a strong feeling the larger leaved variety is an entirely different species

I've only tasted the smaller leaved variety, and this seems to be the variety pictured in the new (and old) Brazilian fruits book.

I believe the larger leaved variety makes a larger fruit.

here is one of the grafted G. gardnerianas from the video...coming along...although it had a little set back with some aphids, and high heat in the greenhouse.

it's funny because I grafted another one, about 2 weeks after I made the video...and I gave that one to a friend as a gift....and now it's growing 2x as fast as the ones I kept.   :o :D

maybe he kept his under better growing conditions?  :-\  or maybe it was because I used a larger rootstock and scion for his plant?  Oh well, I'm just glad the seem to be coming along nicely!!

if and when they fully heal, I will try to remember to post some pics.

Nice, Adam! So, how long did it take from grafting day to pushing the new growth? The another one maybe is growing faster because you gave it as a gift. : -) The one you gave to me is flowering like crazy (the super dwarf one).

Hi, I have been toying with the idea to graft some mangosteen for my nursery and was  encouraged by your reports and photos.  There is a lot of wrapping of the scions and I have used both parafilm and, to save, cling wrap on larger parts still using parafilm where I expect the scion to push out.
My main question here is how do I know when the wrapping can come off without risking drying out.  Thanks,
Peter

as a rule of thumb, i wait for the scion to flush out one set of leaves, and then harden off, then flush out a second set...(and I usually unwrap before it hardens off a second set)

but to be safe, just wait as long as possible, and keep an eye on the graft union, making sure the tape isn't girdling the cambium....this can take over 3 months in some cases...and I have seen the tape left on for a year without any problems (but this all depends on the type of tape, and the plant being grafted)

Ok, thanks.  Everything looks very good so far as you can see in the photo, but I will wait while checking for tight spots.  I am going to do more mangosteen grafts and then cherapu is next.  I have 8 cherapu trees flowering but am undecided on making a selection.  Hopefully, within the next month I can move ahead on that.
Thanks again,
Peter

here is an update from the tree i grafted in the video.

the rootstock seems to be a perfect match.

I will report with pics when it starts to flower...I assume in a year or two

here is the first attempt I've made at grafting Luc's garcinia onto G. intermedia...so far looks really promising.

also here is a pic of a little G. gardneriana, i grafted onto G. intermedia, it's slanted sideways..lol...i did an offset saddle graft, because the scion was thicker than the rootstock.
