Another ridiculous cool snap coming this week
« on: March 23, 2013, 06:43:47 AM »
Ok, we are in late March and this is a bit ridiculous.  While only for a couple of days, lows are forecast to be at or just below 50 and highs at or just below 70.  I know it makes for great sleeping weather (being able to open the windows), it is really enough of this crap.  The plants here, and really myself, would like the warm/hot (this is SFla after all) weather already and would actually like to see it stay for good...

Yeah, it's a bit annoying.  It's like the winter was right shifted a couple of months.  I thought that my Breadfruit and Chempedak had seen the seasons last cool challenge .... I guess not.

On the plus side, some of my mango's that have not yet bloomed or pushed growth still have a chance at setting some fruit.

I'm alright with it.  I don't think the 50's will harm any of my trees; they have withstood worse during the winter.   But I'll enjoy the cooler weather.  The sun still emits the same amount of sunlight...so the trees should still grow in a similar manner.

Weird but spring has been delayed here also. It's been unusally cold for this time of year. Only in last couple of days night time temperature started to warm up. Before that was all the way down to 60F in evenings, very unusual for here in late March.

I think you should check your forecast before you assure yourself that this snap can do no harm.  I don't know everything you have but I do know you have a lot of small stuff and if you have anything the likes of small soursop, abiu, cacao, etc. you might want to consider keeping an eye on the temps and prepare to protect.  They are calling for mid 40s overnight Tuesday/Wednesday morning, that is enough to possibly damage cold sensitive plants, damage that can be easily avoided by some effortless protection..

FYI plant growth rate is very much affected by air and soil temperature, not just amount of leaf photosynthesis.

I'm more irritated at the insane winds this month. It's kicking the hell out of all the new growth.

Noel,  it is me, Arun. Yes, the winds have been terrible. Apart from knocking off little mangoes, I am worried about damage to the Abiu tree that you gave me. Hopefully, it will survive.

You may need to protect it if the temps hit the mid 40s as predicted. Once they get big, cold is not a problem but a little one like that may need protection. Do you have a large garbage can that you can fit over it? That would work for the coldest night but it would be best to remove it during the day so it does not cook when the sun warms up!

That is exactly what I plan to do the next two nights. Hopefully, this is the last cold snap that we are getting this year.

Mamey sapote is my most cold sensitive tree.  I'm an optimist... if my Mamey is severely damaged or dies, it's an opportunity for me to plant another Mahachanok mango.   :D

Calling for 32 for me tomorrow night. That's a little insane. Might have to this the greenhouse back up tonight. That'll be two hours of work that I thought I was done with for the year. Might lose my tomatoes too. Not much that I can do for them.

Good luck John!! I hope it doesn't get to 32 degrees for you...This is really not normal for us on the last week in March  :(

I don't remember it but I heard this has been the coldest March since 1996. I'm not surprised I don't remember...I wasn't growing Mango and Lychees back then,lol...

Nancy - what a bummer!!!!!

I didn't feel so lucky in January when you guys were basking in 70's and 80's and
we were having our 5 day Arctic freeze but
now I count my lucky stars....we're having such divine weather......

Good Luck with whatever you've got left.....

keep watching that thermometer...lowest temps usually occur just before/at sunrise.  You may drop another degree or two (not that it matters in your case but for statistical purposes)

Then after tomorrow temps look like they will shoot up to 60f at night ;).

The great thing about this cold front is that it enabled me to spend all day yesterday and today tending to my trees, giving them their spring care.  However, I forgot about the sunblock yesterday and got a hell of a sunburn!  (I have a dozen mangos on my year-old Pickering tree.  What a little beast!)

My year old Pickering is doing the same thing but I don't know how many of the fruit will survive to maturity. I've already cut some off so the tree won't get stressed.
