Wow, nice tree with lots of fruits, is that yours or just a random tree on someone's property or perhaps one of the members on this forums? Wish lychee's can grow like that over here in central Cali too. Lycheeluva would have a fit over this and maybe ohiojay as well  ;)

Thanks Thao.

This is just one of the first trees to ripen up that I've seen in town.  I've seen trees around town covered with fruits, at all stages, from peasized to fully ripe.

Im surprised that the lychee trees survive in Orlando.  Is this a microclimate, perhaps near a large lake?

haha...good guess...it is near the shore of a lake...but still more than 300ft away.  There are plenty of lychees doing wonderfully that are not near lakes, but usually must have some protection...like being on the south side of a building, or some large oaks.

We also have impressive mango trees... according to the books, there shouldn't be so many healthy trees bearing fruit, larger than 20 ft in Central FL (Orlando area)

Hey Adam,

Do you know what variety of Lychee that is in the picture you posted?  They appear to be fairly large with good red coloration.  Thanks for sharing!

I was in Sebring yesterday and saw some really old lychee trees loaded with fruits...however I couldn't find any for sale in the area...I did pick up three huge watermelons while I was up there...I also noticed some people picking mangoes from trees along Lake Jackson in the city...

Try lychee tree...I think it is more cold resistant than mango

another beautiful tree in my town, but the fruits look a bit stunted.  My friend who's eaten from this tree says the fruits are normally larger.

NICE!! Look at the large mango tree right next to it also...are there any mangoes on that tree...can't see any from that angle?

"Try lychee tree...I think it is more cold resistant than mango"

Zands, you're correct. Lychee trees are more cold resistant than mango trees but not till they are mature and established...guessing after they are over 5+ years old...the most critical time is the first 3 to 4 years...having a milder winter for a few winters in a row or giving them good protection during this time is essential  :)

I lost 2 young lychee trees because I trusted a "new" freeze product that did not work for me at all...I should have just used the good old fashioned Frost cloth and light heat :o(....Lesson learned!

I think LL is right...the fruits are very red...my guess is its Brewster also....My mauritius has a lot of green undertones on the fruit and its almost ripe.

Here are some lychees from the first tree I posted pics of.

So are they brewster or mauritius?  I think lycheeluvr is right with brewster as his guess.

If the fruits are very large, it will have a big seed...if the fruit is medium sized, it almost always has a chicken tongue seed.  I'd say about half fruits have aborted seeds, but other half is nice sized, with a seed to match.

Looks like the fruit from the tree behind my place. I think it's a Brewster with big seeds like that.

the shape and color look like brewster though its unusual for brewster to have chicken tongue seeds. so not sure!
generally, brewster ripen a few weeks after mauritius. which variety is more available now- b or m?

I wonder if the heavy rains affected the crop: about 90% of the lychees on my potted Emperor split after the heavy tropical storm soaking we just got.   :(
They're like the Varmint-Cong...

I just visited the tree today (from first pics). No splitting..the fruits are holding up nicely with tons of rain...but flickers, peckers, rats, and squirrels are having the time of their lives, feasting on lychees.

It's not rain that makes the fruits split, but long dry period followed by sudden very wet period. Here it rains all the time practically and the lychees don't split. So consistent watering would help against this problem.

Took this picture summer of 2010...located in South Sebring near a Nursery I was looking for. Located on the Lake in someone's front yard... explains why this tree has done so well and has gotten this large.

Lychees do not need that much maintenance. This is a 30 foot Brewster on a vacant lot near me. It never gets any fertilizer, extra water or anything other than plenty of sun. It could definitely use some size control though. I've been told that as long as you don't cut back branches further than 3 inch diameter wood you will still get a crop the the next year.

Turns out the fruits I posted pics of are mauritius.

the brewsters are more watery, with a redder, and more spiked shell.

I like the Mauritius fruits better, because of the drier fruit, that doesn't spill everywhere like brewster.

I had a Hak ip fruit today that blew them both out of the water...the fruit was 1/3 bigger than any lychee ive eaten...i thought it was an emporer when it was handed to me.  Hak ip is by far the best lychee I've had...but have only tasted 4-5 types.

the only complaint I hear about Hak ip, is the trees arent reliable producers..making scant crops consistently for most growers.
