Jackfruit Female Flowers: Differing appearance and variety.
« on: February 27, 2013, 05:04:06 PM »
There is some difficulty, especially with new tree owners, on how to identify a female Jackfruit flower.  I originally was a tad bit frustrated on my inability to identify female vs male flowers on my first Jackfruit tree.  Over time, I have learned how to identify the male vs female flowers with relative ease on my Bangkok Lemon ( seedling?) Jackfruit tree.  It wasn't easy though when I was inexperienced with the tree.

Now I have a second tree fruiting.  It is a seedling from a Jak I purchased at Robert is Here ( Black Gold?) a few years ago.  The female flowers on this tree have a different physical appearance than my BL (S?) tree.

We know that females are more likely to be produced on thick stalks originating near a major limb or trunk.  They also tend to have a "ring" around the neck of the flower.  But males can also have these traits, depending on variety and maturity of the tree.

I am currently attempting to cross hand pollinate these two varieties in hopes of producing fruit with the highest fruit to rag content.

Maybe we should fill this thread with female flowers of different varieties.  It might help those who are having difficulty in identifying flowers.

Bangkok Lemon (seedling?) Female Flower in the receptive stage.  You can see the transition from stem to fruit is fairly gradual.

Now compare that to this Female Flower ( receptive) on my BG-S tree.  Notice how abrupt the transition collar from stem to fruit is.

It is not so easy to see in the photo, but the BG-S Females have a very distinct lip at the stem/fruit transition.  Nearly impossible to miss when seen in person.  Much different than the males.

How do you know a male flower from a female flower? Answer: you know it when you see it. That is a lawyer joke (a Supreme Court justice, in a uniquely unhelpful opinion, used that phrase to describe how to identify porn).

Over the past month, I have seen many flowers on my tree, with that distinct ring, and all turned out to be male. :(

Yeah, the males on my BG-S tree have a ring too.  It was deceiving at first.  The ring on my BG-S males is actually more pronounced than the ring on my Female BL's.

I bet you will notice a distinct difference when a female flower appears.  The ring will  likely be noticeably more pronounced and abrupt where it connects to the stem.

When a female appears, post up a pic so we have a look.  What variety is it ?

It's a MAI-3 which I purchased from
Excalibur in a 25 gallon container about a year ago, And has been in the ground ever since. I am anxiously awaiting a female presence, and will post as soon as I get.

Great idea. Maybe everyone can post the male flowers alongside as well to compare?

Males produce pollen, females don't. I will be watching more carefully now thanks to Sleepdoc. I'll try to take photos. So far they have been doing their thing without a peeping tom.  ;)

Thanks for the pics!  Pretty cool on the differences there.

The one...they only female flower I might add...that came from my gold nugget, was definitely different than any of the males.  I mean as soon as it emerged, it was quite apparent the bloom was female.  It even looked like a tiny fruit already.  All of the males have had a long, narrow stem.  Unfortunately, the female developed a little bit more size and then dropped off.  I'm anxiously awaiting more females to start appearing.  Males continue to push out.  Really aggravating!

Jay, I'm sorry for your loss.  Hopefully you will do better with the ladies soon! ;-)

I've noticed on my MIA-1 seedling that stems which ultimately have female flowers on them always (or nearly so) have a male on the end.  (I'll get on the pictures tonight.) Is that the case with other varieties?

Yep.  I remember being so annoyed waiting for the Female flowers to emerge :)  I bet it will happen soon.

Not always.  My BG(?)-S has stems with female flowers only.  My BL- S(?) does it both ways.

Here a a few pics from the two different trees .. Male and Female.

Bangkok Lemon - Seedling (?)

Male

Male with pollen

Female

Black Gold ? - Seedling

Male with a little pollen

Female with better angle at collar

Nice pics Clint.  Here are a few pics I took this morning from trees I planted 3 months ago.

Crunchy Lemon male flower, tree is less then 3 ft tall

Mai 1 male flower, tree is 4 ft tall

I think the Golden Nugget at my old house is flowering females.  I will do a drive by and snap a pic if I can remember on the way home today.

So far I am only getting males on my NS1 seedling.  But as a side note, I had never been around a fruiting jack before and had no idea the male flowers smelled so good.  Really strong fruity fragrance.

Hi - I have my first blossoms coming out on my Cheena Jackfruit (crossed with Champadek). Does anyone know how large or old a female blossom must be before it is receptive ? The male blossom first out on a branch is 2" long and about 2 weeks old, has been shedding pollen, but now starting to get moldy and die. Meanwhile, a blossom just behind it is an inch long and hopefully be female, but is still deep green and smooth, so wondering if it is receptive yet...
I am growing Lychee, Anonas, Dragon fruit, Mulberry, White Sapote, Canistel, Avocado, etc in my new yard.

Heres an Excalibur Red just under 3 years old from a 3 gallon pot with 14 fruit on it now and a lot of male flowers also..I've hand polenated it crossing it with a Mai 1 on some of the fruit..if you look close you can see the difference in male and female

Pics? It's probably a male based on your description.

Are you sure those are above the graft? I know Excalibur used to graft jackfruits pretty high at one point.

Here is a female right after emerging. I pulled off the encapsulating leaves. Texture doesn't really change.

OK, not to derail here, but my jackfruit is showing some flower buds.  Now that I know (sort of) what to look for, what do I do with this info?  Do I have to hand polinate?  When?

Thank you.
