Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2024 FL Mango Season

Good luck Bov! Next year, going to spray a few trees. So, LZ will join Sugar Loaf, Sien Ta Lone/Guava, and Edward in the regimen.

Sweet Tart and Mmm4 do not seem bothered by pm, like those above. Glenn and Ceci Love took some damage, but are okay with decent fruit set. Orange Sherbet and Coco Cream are pumping more flowers and holding fruit, so hopeful for a good season here. Seems Alex/Squam/TAF is predicting a good season up there. I am ready for real mangoes, can hardly wait.

About 9 - 10 feet tall here, and no flowers yet. Some minute budding, not sure if new growth or flowering.

Great germination on the ashwanganda seeds, thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Thai Dwarf vs Siam Jumbo

How would you compare the flavors: sweetness, sourness, and complexity? I found Thai dwarf to be bland and a bit dry, as berries go. Waiting on some Siam Jumbos to ripen up, but am impatient and want to know now =)

Growing 2 Sabaras, red hybrid, Grimal, and blue vexator all in ground, on limestone. Except for mixing in some nice soil when planting and occasional fertilizer, not doing much to them and certainly not trying to bring the ph down (ph of soil is high). All except the Grimal (2-3 feet) have fruited. It can be done. Partial shade and regular/lots of water has worked here.

I'm with you GG! Never have sprayed, and don't want to, but going to try on SL and 1 or 2 others. If PM hammers them again, puggin' and graftin' time.
I visited Truly Tropical and Tropical Acres Farm on Friday (03/15/24) and their trees looked like they got beyond the powdery mildew and have a very nice fruit set. I didn't walk their properties, what I could see looked o much better than my carnage.

Yeah having Har around to spray would work wonders with my yard. This year convinced me to purchase a good sprayer for next years battle.

My Sugarloaf got wrecked so hard I yanked it out. Im done with that low fruitset variety.

I hear ya! I'm giving Sugar Loaf 1 more year, with spraying next season. If it doesn't make me happy, puggin' n graftin'.

The tree is so beautiful with near perfect growth habit, and the fruit are great, so would love to be able to hang on to it. Seems I need more copper in my diet anyway.

Amazon carries a lot of Fox Farms products. A bit pricey, but worth it for rare, treasured, and pricey plants.

Kevin is right! OF from FF is great, I also like Happy Frog because it seems a little lighter on young plants. You could add a little more perlite to either.

I'm trying to recall the taste difference bw St and CL, and remember posting about it before. CL is strongly sweet with some sour and has a little more spice to it, and ST has a little more of sourness to it which nicely balances the intense cola sweetness. A perfect CL is a little better than a perfect ST, if you like the spice, but not by much.

It takes some trial and error to figure out the ideal time to pick ST, but it is quite forgiving when picked a bit early. Pretty good shelf life on ST as well. CL is easier to tell when to pick, but don't think it is as forgiving when picked early, and don't think its shelf life is as good.

Too bad their growth habit seems to be so different, casting doubt on the longterm success of a multi-graft tree. Maybe one of these many ST seedlings that people are growing will be comparable in flavor, with a dwarf growth habit.

Both! Each are must haves in my yard. Flavor bombs, and different enough from each other. Both produce well, and started doing so within 2 years of planting/grafting.

Sweet Tart is a champ. Leaves are green and mostly healthy. Holding lots of fruit and does not appear affected by pm, like several others. Mine is planted in part shade, cuts some of the growth down.

Ceci Love leaves are not as clean as ST. Makes me wonder if the fruit are more susceptible to pathogens. Hard to compare growth to ST, as the former is a grafted tree, and the latter are branches grafted onto Glenn tree.

Both are currently holding clean fruit, and continuing to flower.

1 or 2 late rainy cold fronts appear to have significantly damaged crops this year. All of the early blooms were wasted here. Still, looking good down this way. Just bummed about Sugar Loaf and Guava blooms getting dogged.

Beautiful tree, worth growing as an ornamental. Wow!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Self Fertile Sapodilla

Some things I've noticed about SW: it always has fruit, the fruit are quite good (if you can beat the squirrels), it fruits in shaded areas, it requires nothing extra from me/easy to care for, its a beautiful tree, and the tree is easy to control. I've topped and trimmed this tree once in about 8 years.

I know much less about BS, but am hopeful it will kick all other's asses when it comes to fruit quality. Ours has flowered and held fruit, but not all the way to ripening yet. It's still a baby.

SW flowers and sets fruit well, seemingly on its own; but I don't know where these bees and other pollinators have been or what they have gotten into. SW is a nice sap, smaller size fruit.

Nice, and congratulations! Hope you get to try it soon, and report back =)

Mine is a bit smaller, maybe next year.

I have 3 "e. burkartianas," and 1 Unicamp; pretty sure they are different species. The 3 burks all look the same, and from 2 different sources.

8 days is nothing when it comes to ordering seeds and plants, ESP international. Don't order anything from me, lol

Self-pollinated seedlings are genetically diverse, unlike cuttings. Just not as diverse as crossing with a different plant.

I have a few trees that are in a situation similar to what you are describing, GG. ndm4 years of nada, Coco Cream a few fruits, but looking promising this season, Kesar produces well, Guava fair (younger tree around the corner in full sun is covered in fruitlets, way nicer tree). Variety dependent, but still won't be as good as getting more sun. Consider Kesar.

Seems PM is hitting hard in some places. Powdery mildew wiped out a magnificent bloom on Sugar Loaf. So sad. 2 mangoes are hanging, and one looks infected. Only hope is a 2nd bloom, which is doubtful. Small bloom on Guava appears to have come to nothing, but think I see lil nubs ready to pop. A Guava mango tree gifted to a neighbor around the corner is in full bloom and setting well. Theirs is in the wide open, sun helps a lot.

Mmm4, Sweet Tart, Edward, and Glenn are showing very good fruit set. Flowers on Kesar, Coco Cream, and OS are just getting started, some opening.

Looking to be a nice mango season here, but later than usual. These mango fruitlets gotta long way to go.

Beautiful! Please give a taste rundown after you get into those sweet uvaia.

Nelita (rootstock with Garnet on top) flowered already. Plant was looking sad, but now busting with reddish new growth.

I've been watching one of the videos. Very cool how there are so many rare plants just hanging out in the high grass. Gotta get me some mini bovine!

Garcinas, some eugenias, Thai/Indian jujube, and some loquat (Yehuda) do well in partial shade. Mangoes don't fruit so well when shaded, I've sadly found.
