New Graft Tool And Test Video! Updated
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:46:52 PM »
Hello Members ,

So I decided to try out this tool for my multi grafted project tree .
Another member has experienced great results with this tool , works well I think .

I prepared the sweet tart scion and I used some advice from Simon and other forum member that used black tape and a cloth pin to secure the Graft Union .

Wish me luck folks ! ..

Ed

Thanks for sharing. I bought one of these a few months ago but haven't really tried it out yet. It looks encouraging.

Interesting video.  How do you sharpen the tool and how many cuts before the blade gets dull?

Hello Members ,

Just to update you on my Mango Graft Video , so after 3 weeks there was no fusion .
I think I might of harvested the scion to early , I just waited to the stumps fell off the prepared scion without any bud action going on .

Today I grafted another scion onto the same tree with the same tool , this time I waited till the buds swelled up , I will report in 2 weeks or so .

Thanks Ed

The video never showed the tree side cut done, so does a person have to change the adustment on the tool somehow to do a female cut?

No just turn the tool around for the female cut , I didn’t have anyone to hold the camera , easy tool to use !

The only time you remove anything is to swap out the blades .

from my understanding there might not be enough surface exposed for the union when I do mango grafts I try to get about 3inches on each side others can chime in.....that's why most reviews only suggest these tools for stone fruits.....there is a tool that you can do mangos but they sell for like 800 bucks

1” union works for mango grafting but of course quality of the scion and rootstock matter also.

IMO manual grafting is the way to go. It’s allows you to graft under so many different scenarios so you will need to practice it anyway

Same here, I want to learn and be good at grafting with tools and manual methods. Sometimes because of number of good branches available, I want to be certain that graft has a good chance of taking.

Amazon decribed this tool being able to handle the smallest diameter scion at 1/5 of an inch i think thats the tools biggest weakness at least for me sometimes i graft small stuff  as small as 1/8 inch but i would like to buy this tool and try it for the pencil size and bigger scions.

I like to Cuts and Hawk have been getting good results from it , it didn’t work for me , but I Belive it was due to my inexperienced in grafting , if the bud wood was at its right stage , I Belive it would of taken .

Don’t give up my n this tool as of yet!, I will Udate on 2 additional Grafts using this s tool, I modified the way you secure the scion to the Rootstock / tree .

Will show pics in a few days I don’t want to jump the gun 😊, the 1st Failed Graft was most likely my fault , I realized what went wrong .

Be back 8n a few days with pics ..

This tool is the exact same one as the one generally called the Omega grafting tool which has been discussed here a long while back. It's just disguised in a different form. It now comes with 3 different forms, all using the same blades and cuts.
They don't work with soft woods as they crush instead of slicing the scion.

The only tool that I found to work so far is the real deal Scionon one.

This works similarly and uses regular blades. It doesn’t have a grooved bottom to hold scions like scionon but has a wider section. With practice you get a hold of it, but scionon should be much easier to use as it is advertised for unskilled persons, lol.

I've tried this one also and another similar it, no go. They're not made for grafting and the wedge cutting is very limited and that's an understatement.

Scionon is the only one that works IF you really want a working grafting tool. It also needs some training to be able to cut properly. I'm sure Simon will confirm this now that he just bought one.

My first try with this cheap tool, not sure if I need more cleaner cut for grafting than this. Worked every time for me.

Cutting only one side is about Ok, especially on hard wood scion like on your photo. It's harder to do a proper cleft cut. And on soft wood it's even harder.
But try it out by all means, it didn't work for me but it might just work for you.

Also, if you're going to do hard wood cuts mainly, the Omega tool and variants would do the job just fine. And use the good old knife (including utility ones) for the soft wood grafts.

That was an old picture, I will post more pictures after I am back from vacation mid July. I didn’t think it would have trouble cutting on both sides. It didn’t look much different than scionon side by side except that scionon has grooves  to hold the scion better on the bottom part. Besides grafting it is a cool utility knife :)

Make sure you do only side grafts and similar ones as this tool cannot properly do cleft type cut. You cannot slice cut like a Scionon tool, you have to crush cut which is a no no for soft scions but with the sharpness of the utility blade, it might work.
See below.

This is what I have and tried and given up. Got them at HD and they come in 2 sizes:

They are not meant to slice cut things, so a crush cut is the only way possible to get a decent size cut:

Next to a Scionon, you could clearly see that the Scionon opens much wider and with the groove to hold the tip of the scion, it could easily slice cut it.

kh0110, looks like you have a different kind of utility knife than craftsman's I have. Which may be why you weren’t satisfied with its results. Anyway I ordered a 3-22 mm scionon and hopefully it will be delivered before I am back home. I will post side by side results. In the meantime I am enjoying abundance of cheap fruits in Phuket :)

Received my 3-22 mm scionon. It is well built and comes with extra blades and grafting instructions. I am impressed. I have been using utility knife and grafting tools in the past. Here is a pic of the utility knife next to scionon. I will be grafting some mangoes soon and post results. However, I will keep practicing manual grafting.

This tool sounds great to me i plan on getting one if someone is doing many cuts a day, cutting manual is not the way to go unless your really fast and really skilled, i think its better than the other graft tool commonly seen mainly because it cuts longer than 1/4 of an inch it would be nice to see it perform on harder branches to see if it crushs them instead of cutting them.

1” union works for mango grafting but of course quality of the scion and rootstock matter also.

Did you just wrap the scion with grafting tape or do you do the bag as well?

I wrapped the scion with buddy tape and covered the joint with electrical tape to hold it securely for ~2 weeks. I took the electrical tape off once the scion started to flush.

Update on scionon, i used it for veneer grafting this morning. I was able to get a clean cut in 1 swipe,  it was quick and convenient. Same results could be achieved with cheap blades as well, but I like the scionon convenience :)
