Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia Macrophylla or Magnifolia?
« on: June 06, 2022, 12:43:09 PM »
Hola Amigos,
Recently purchased a couple of trees here in southern Ecuador, Vilcabamba area. The nurseryman called it a Mamey Zapote. It's clearly not Pouteria Sapota, the very tasty Central American Mamey.
Here it is known as Ecuadorian Mamey Zapote. Looks to me like Garcinia Macrophylla or Magnifolia? I'm told it likes full sun and little to moderate watering, probably due to its somewhat thick and waxy leaves.
Looking through various threads here on the Forum, the consensus seems to be that there are quite a few varieties of South American Garcinias, with no real clear classification. I haven't seen nor tasted any Ecuadorian Mamey fruit. From Mike's description here (https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=42574.msg418263#msg418263), I'm hoping it's the variety he finds very tasty!
Here are some photos of the trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Tree ID - Large round leaves
« on: September 26, 2021, 12:17:44 PM »
Hola Amigos - Can anyone ID this tropical tree? Bought it recently here in southern Ecuador. The owner claimed it may be a type of sapote; he called it sapote rojo (red sapote). Says it prefers humid conditions, but that's all he knew about it. Does not look like any kind of sapote I know of.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Babamaleza natural herbicide
« on: November 29, 2019, 03:04:04 PM »
Should U see this pop up on the interwebs, you'll know what it's about.

From a recent Ecuadorian FB post:

"Hay un herbicida natural muy bueno producido aquí en Ecuador. Llamado Babamaleza, es producido por una compañía llamada Avemco, en Bucay. Certificado orgánico y hecho de la escorrentía del jugo de cacao (baba) durante la fermentación del cacao. Los granjeros lo prefieren más que los herbicidas de glifosato y paraquat"
