I saw some mangos in Mysore, India that were totally round and almost the size of a basketball. I never found out what cultivar they were or their weight. But i would guess closer to 5 kilos. Made the giant Keitts look wimpy!  :o

Fruit world description for some is below;

Ah Toy Long
Indonesian type, long green curved fruit.
Alphonso
The prized commercial type in India.  Mid season, strong flavour.
Anwaar Patool
  Indian variety under trial.
Apricot
Indian, small, rich flavour, heavy cropper, early.
Bambaroo
Early, medium size, orange yellow blush.
Banana
Long yellow oblong fruit, early, good quality.
Banganpalli
  Indian green skin variety.
Bombay Green
Green skin, very aromatic flavour, mid season.
Carrie
Oval fruit, yellow skin, mid season, good quality.
Cedar Bay
Very long fruit, slight yellow blush, late.
Chausa
Very large green fruit, excellent quality, very late.
Coconut
Huge green skinned fruit up to 3 kg.
Common
Very hardy tree for cooler areas. High in fibre.
Dashehari
Oblong fruit, yellow skin, mid season, excellent.
Edwards
Large fruit, yellow blush, late, very sweet.
Elephant Tusk
From Rabaul, huge fruit up to half a metre long.
Florigon
Medium, round yellow, orange blush, mid season.
Gedong

Glenn

The elephant tusk from rabaul is actually Rabaul/Cedar Bay and it is a whopper.I have seen 3-4kg fatties in Thailand but still not as big as

I have been trying to get picture evidence for this for a couple years now,  there is a variety of mango on this Island called "Caco de Hombre"  or Mans head.

First time I come across it was back in the late 70s an uncle brought two of them, one weighed 13 lbs about the size of a basketball , the other 9lbs.  !   Last one I saw was about 4 years ago. not as big as the 13 pounder but was pretty big.

I am told only a couple trees are still around.

Not a quality mango, I did try some from that one back in the 70s, I remember it being bland, not so sweet, and had fiber. although it didn't look that ripe.

If I ever get a picture of one I will post it here.

The mangos i saw in India were also quite bigger than that. But if you don't report it to Guiness then it's not in the record book. For example, right now record jackfruit is Hawaiian 76 pounder. But it's well known they can get well over 100 pounds. Really fruits are a fairly new category for Guiness and there's not much in there.

Haha, why does this reminds me of, " Size is not important, its how you wiggle your worm"  ;D

Anyhow, the thread is on the name of the  biggest mangoes, irregardless of quality. of course i would prefer quality over size, as i am sure most would,

Now if someday they can breed a delicious mango the size of a Sugar baby watermelon maybe that will do.   but from  a marketing point of view, mangoes from 1-2 pounds are preferred size.

Adam,

At John Ensey grove(Ed Enseys brother) just south of Ed's place. Is a tree called Ford. That tree we would get 9-10lb mango's off it.

(And Yes that is the parent tree where Dr Campbell got the bud wood from.)

Not the best mango, but I think people bought it because it was so big, and would take it home to show their friends. Next time you are around go down and see Randy&Kathy. The tree is still there.

Joe.

LMAO... amigo, this is another context..  ;D

Seriously, I'm growing Keitt just because it is a very late mango, which you can eat when no other mango is around. If it wasn't the case, I would not grow it. The big mangos I've eaten around the world were rather boring...

If someone lays their hands on an 8lber then they have the world record so keep your eyes peeled.Come December I'll post cedar bay/rabaul pix an eyes will be popping an I'm already warming up the scales. It is a unique collision of size and quality.People talk about wizards wands, small packages and fight in dogs when defending smallness but size matters.

Just Googled wizard wand, but got no clarification.  Maybe this expression hasn't reached the states yet?

It is not the size of the wand that counts but the magic of the wizard behind it.
