yes.  grafting faster, and almost guarantees you get the same fruit.

Adam , I think I was't clear with the question , I'll rephrase it :

What would give the fastest fruiting :

Grafting on a branch of a mature fruiting tree ( different variety ) or

Grafting on a seedling of the same variety .

The budwood is from a fruiting tree .

And when is the best time to do this , it is an excellent White sapote for an almost tropical climate .

oh I see.

I think grafting on a branch of a mature tree would be quicker than grafting on a seedling, because a seedling has to grow up to a certain size before it holds fruits.  A grafted branch can support fruits quickly.

I think airlayering white sapote is even faster to fruit than grafting in some cases.  It's easy too.

Yes, grafting scion's from fruiting tree onto mature W. Sapote will get you fruit faster than grafting onto seedling. I have multi-grafted mature trees that I grafted scions from W. sapote fruiting trees in 2011 and many of the grafted branches on the mature trees are flowering for fist time this year where as same scions that I put onto seedling trees are not flowering yet! I helped collect 28 varieties of W. Sapote from CRFG collector Bob Chambers in De Luz, Ca. in 2011. Hope that helps with your question Luc.

dude, u gotta look at the buds (where new growth emerges) and make sure to time it right!

too early is better than too late!

white sapote is almost always graftable, and is one of the easiest plants to graft year round!

Scott, so you are saying if you graft on a fruiting tree you'll get fruits faster than you would in a seedling? The reason I ask is because I did some grafts onto my grafted Suebelle. When can we do another tour to Mr. chambers orchard?

Luc , Adam has the timing when to graft right on!
Joe, yes if you graft onto a mature tree it has bigger root structure to push those scions, as far as when you can go visit Bob Chambers place it would be best to contact Bob Holzinger down in San Diego. PM me if you need his contact #

Thanks Scott. I have some guys from the forum who are CRFG Orange County members asking me about touring his orchard. I will do that!

Has anyone made it back to Bob's orchards since the 2011 visit ?  Any new observations from growing out his varieties?

in developing custard apple selections the breeding program habitually grafted very young seedlings onto mature rootstock to promote much earlier fruiting to accelerate breeding program.
