Fruits that stay fresh for backcountry & travel
« on: May 18, 2018, 06:38:00 PM »
There are many fruits that are very perishable and due not last long after picked.
What are the fruits that last longest after being picked?
I'm thinking of Dates and Jujube.
Bearrs Limes often stay good for a week after falling on the ground.

I guess I should only include fresh fruits, because a lot of fruits last for a long time if dried.

Navel oranges seem to last a long time, as do apples.  Pomegranates are also relatively long lasting, though not quite as long.  Tamarind and carob are sort of dried fruit so I don't know whether to count them, but they also last a reasonable amount of time.  Pineapple guavas are also relatively long lasting before they ripen.  Fuyu-type persimmons are also relatively long lasting as long as they aren't bruised.

“Winter” melons are named as such because summer harvests can last into the winter without refrigeration.  Duration varies. Casabas, Crenshaws and a few watermelons are in the category.

Passionfruits keep for long time and are hard and pack well. I was just thinking that casabanana (Sicana odorifera) would be excellent, it keeps for many months, up to a year.
