Title: New rare Mexican fruits may be available in 2014
Post by: luc on December 27, 2013, 07:53:18 PM
Since several of the forum members have been asking me for all kinds of obscure jungle fruits I have been trying to find other nuts like me in Mexico.
There are probably more rare fruiters in one county in CA than in the whole of Mexico ( or maybe they do not have computers or internet ) , but my hours of surfing finally paid of . One guy in the northern Vera Cruz area , still huge forests there... his problem is very little knowledge of scientific names and even less English. Anyway ...I see you are getting bored so here's a few pics he send me of one I could not identify . The local name is zapote niņo , if you Google this P. campechiana will come up ....it is not , look at the seed...he describes it as peanut shaped and tastes like wine ( free translation...hahaha ) He knows about the Canistel , grows there wild also...He says this fruit , trees are very hard to find , is really very good eating .

If the package is not stolen or lost by the Mexican mail I will be the happy owner of the seed that is just germinating .

Happy New Year every one .

The top two pictures look like olosapo. The fruits are delicious, like a canistel but with more caramel flavor. In El Salvador they are called sapotillo.

What would be the difference between C. polyandria and C. latifolia ?

This one is different from the Olosapo that grows here in my area.

Luc , remember the one we ate in Tela, in a corner outside of a school? Very good by the way! And yes taste like wine! There was the tree with fruits on it and in the ground, I also saw them in Veracruz ( north )
When visiting my inlaws, we have many trees here in Vallarta along the rivers, people call it here Sapotillo, but this ones are way inferior lots of fiber and scanty flesh, most of the trees never set fruit, the under leave is  whooly white , in Honduras is call monkikiac fruit

Sorry for the misinformation, Luc. It seems like Couepia latifolia is native to the northern part of Brazil and Coloumbia, not Mexico.

Here is a general information about Couepia species from Page 254

Hi Luc,

Your seedlings look very similar to my Licania Platypus :
