Hey Greg,

I haven’t been back to Exotica for a few years now, but years before that, I did purchase their large lemon guava type.  It has fruited for me and the fruits are about 1 1/2" wide.  I also have the standard size one from Home Depot and they're approximately 3/4".  They taste about the same, but not really worth eating the smaller ones when you have the larger ones available.

I've also grown out seeds of the large one and they have consistently grown the larger size fruits.  I think there's a good chance of getting the larger fruit.

Simon, I have never seen a Yangmei plant in real life, but I have a female wax myrtle (myrica cerifera) in my back yard. Its flower buds look exactly like what you have in the picture.

Hi Galatians552,

Does this look like the same flower buds on your myrica cerifera?  Unfortunately, I decapitated mine to graft Yangmei on, so won't be able to find out.

No, those look like vegetive buds to me. The female flower buds look almost like a really small, smooth pinecone. I don't have a male tree, so I am not as familiar with those buds.

Thanks, I didn't even consider that myrica cerifera would also be separate male and female trees.

Norm, could be the same fellow I wonder if he grew up in L.A. area? Do you know him and if so does he grow Lucuma?

Sorry, I don't know him personally or know whether he grows Lucuma.  I believe Edgar Valdivia knows him.  Dario is/was heavily involved with growing Cherimoya commercially.

Yes Nate, I heard from my friend Bob Holzinger old time CRFGer that there was a guy in Orange County Chapter or some where down in greater L.A. area. My the name of Grossenburger that had the moist one and he had tasted it! I have no contacts down that way any more but will be puttings out feelers to some folks I know to see if we can find this one!!

Hi Robert,

Are you referring to Dario Grossberger of Camarillo and owner of Condor Growers?  Same origin of the Condor Dragonfruit.

Hi Carolyn,

I just noticed a first bloom from a seedling of yours.  Hope I get at least one fruit to try this year.

Thanks again!

I recently did my first graft of this type with a whip and tongue graft in March and this is what it looks like today.  The rootstock was already pushing, but the scion was dormant with evident buds.  I don't think I'm out of the woods yet, but it looks promising.   Good luck.

I ate my first Crown 1 fruit. The taste was similar to a concord grape. It was not overly sweet. The size was good, bigger than the reds I had on hand but not as big as some of the whopper reds and grimals I have harvested. The skin was thicker than a red, similar to a grimal. The skin did not have any objectionable flavors and seemed edible. In the taste test of both of the pictured fruits, I liked the flavor of the red better.

Crown 1 flesh

Crown 1 single seed, multi-segmented

I finally got two fruits from my Crown 1 tree.  I thought there's supposed to be a distinctive crown at the end of the fruit, but I don't really see it.  Does this look like the correct variety?  I still have the PIN tag on the tree.

The larger two fruits are Crown 1 and the smaller two for comparison are Sabara.

This is a great pictorial but it does sound like quite a bit of work.  Could you elaborate on the below process a little?  I'm having trouble visualizing.  Is it multiple batches being boiled down or one batch?

"2 days of boiling, pour off, reduce and repeat-"

Thanks!

Received quicker than expected and all grafted up.  Thanks Frank!

Brad, here's a bark graft that I did a few years back.  I have to agree with Kaz, that it's not a nice looking type of graft in comparison to a cleft graft.

I’ve been distributing “Inca Red” scion since 2015 at least so other tff members may have fruited it.
I scoured my records and Unfortunately could not find out who I got this from originally.
I haven’t fruited it myself so time will tell how good a fruit it really is by hearing tasting accounts from a few different tree’s.

Inca Red originally came from Axel of Cloudforest Cafe forum, who is an occasional member here, and had previously posted many times about it.  I have one for many years now.  It hasn't grown very much, but it's mainly because it's been stunted in a pot.  It hasn't been productive nor much red in color, but it is very tasty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Df varieties?
« on: November 02, 2020, 10:41:21 PM »
I have 2 df varieties labeled as George and Oung Ong. I can't find any information about them

That's likely George from the late George Emerich who was a prominent CRFG member.  It's a white flesh variety, very sweet, but not a Vietnamese variety.  I believe it is neither self fertile nor self compatible.

As for Quang Ong variety, it may be QOSF, also known as Quang Ong Self Fertile, which was later renamed as American Beauty.  Magenta flesh, self fertile and self pollinating.  However, he grows a lot of different varieties.

Hope this helps.

eNorm, how much time between the graft and the bud emerging.
That looks good.

Hi Orkine,

I don't have exact dates, but I estimate somewhere between 2 to 2 1/2 weeks before it started pushing.  It's mostly in the shade.  The other two that I grafted on a larger tree... I'm really surprised those failed.

Hi Mike,

I've got a piece of it here and pushing.  I hope it's more than residual energy.  The other two grafts are wilting unfortunately.  This was the one I had the least faith in.  Thanks again with sharing this budwood.

Kaffir Plum, I had never heard of it until now.  This seems to be the closest so far.  The description of the fruit sounds very similar, based on the small taste at the tip of my tongue.  What concerns me is the possible invasiveness of the roots and how big they can really get, as they seem to be used as wind blocks and shade.  I may need to consider cutting it down, if this is truly the fruit.

I took new pictures of the leaves, front and back and compared it to an image from Daleys Fruit Nursery in Australia, shown below.  Where the leaf meets the stem is reddish on the Daleys image and not on mine.  Could be due to variation?

According to the Specialty produce site:  "An odd red leaf may be scattered throughout the foliage, which is key to its identification", which does appear in my leaf image.

Couldn't it be some type of Davidsonia?
It does have that upright look, where the fruit hang lower and the leaves are higher up, but that may be coincidental?

If this helps, here is what the seed looks like.  There's very little flesh/pulp and mostly seed.

I cut the it open and a big seed, as expected, but was surprised to see it juicy.  It's also relatively thick skinned.  I tasted it with the tip of my tongue and it was pleasantly acidic.  Not sour like a lemon and not sweet per se.

Here's a picture of it cut open, if that helps at all.

There is no way to be even closedly related to walnuts or anything in that genus.

I guess when I was considering it to be a nut, i had not yet seen the change in the color of the fruit.  I found some pictures back in October 2016, where it seemed to have flowered and had green fruit.
