As if protecting fruit from blue jays, raccoons, squirrels, and rats was not hard enough...

We now have a very large iguana that has made our backyard/canal his home. Have seen him a few times now slowly approach a low hanging mango and leisurely eat it to the pit, usually while still on the tree. We'vs definitely fattened him up this summer.

Will try to snap some pics when I have a camera on me.

Not sure if it's too early or if I did something to offend my Kent tree, but have had two mangoes ripen thus far and both have been atrocious - ok maybe an exaggeration, but a Tommy Atkins/Haden type flavor experience. Kent usually delivers consistently for us, so I'm hoping maybe these are just early and not indicative of the remaining fruits.

Anyone else experiencing the same with their Kents?

Was at Lowe's in Coral Springs on Friday night and walked by their fruit trees to see what they had - the usual Tommy Atkins and Haden mangoes (yum!!!) but noticed about a dozen different apple trees as well. Don't remember the exact variety names, but I don't think any were less than 500 chill hours or so. I'm sure they'll fruit wonderfully in south Florida.

Sorry Lowe's, but Home Depot Coral Springs >>> Lowe's Coral Springs (at least for fruit trees).

Today we took down the huge seedling avocado tree in our backyard that, while yummy, was a sporadic producer (maybe once every three years if lucky) and was planted smack in the middle of precious yard real estate. Sad to see it go but happy that I've now freed up space for 3-4 more trees (already have a longan and peach waiting to go in, need to figure out replacement avocado).

Space to plant more trees shouldn't get me excited but alas, I have a problem. Hello, my name is Dan, and I have an addiction. Hi Dan!!!

Looking to pick up a couple avocado trees whose sizes will be managed by pruning. Any combos that work well down here? Mostly looking for Oct - Jan fruit.

81
For anyone interested. Was just over there picking up some stuff and noticed they had a few 15 gallon decent looking barbados cherry trees. No idea what variety they might be (anyone know?). Only thing I saw was they've got the same mycitrustrees or whatever tag that Home Depot's citrus all come from.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grumichama flowering up nicely
« on: March 12, 2015, 09:36:40 AM »
This little fella fruited for the first time last year - gave us 2 or 3 fruits. Looked at it yesterday and it has exploded in flowers - just about the whole tree/shrub is covered in white flowers.

83
Just planted this Sweetheart lychee last year - it's not in a great spot, doesn't get a ton of sun, and is still small scraggly - yet when walking around today I noticed the below. Am I crazy or is that what lychee flowers look like? And why the heck is this little fella flowering when my two larger, bushier lychees aren't doing squat?

84
Given the sheer volume of fruit both on and off the tree, it seems a waste to, well, waste the chewed out rotten fruit by just throwing it in the lake. Any issues with throwing the fruit in the composter? Wondering if maybe the seeds would sprout and I'd have a mess of 500 baby starfruit growing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red jaboticaba fruiting for first time
« on: January 02, 2015, 03:36:08 PM »
Almost didn't notice it - was walking by the tree and saw a black ball sitting there. Upon closer inspection I saw 1 ripe fruit, 1 already dried out fruit, and several flowers out and just starting to push out. Pleased to say the first fruit was delicious. This was bought from Bender's Grove last year in the summer (feels weird calling it last year) as a 7 gallon. Guess he wasn't kidding when he said these were fruiting size.

Several of my mango trees are under a full scale invasion from, well, scale. I guess I got lazy cause a couple of them were completely covered in honeydew/scale poop. Spent a few hours manually scrubbing leaves and have sprayed the trees with a neem oil/soap combo a couple of times, but just noticed this little guy today with a bunch of friends hanging out in one of the mango trees. Is this the famous green lacewing that supposedly feasts on aphids? If it is and they've taken up the fight, I might ease up on the neem attack as I assume they aren't thrilled with that stuff. What say you beneficial insect identification experts?

For some reason the lawn guys thought it would be a good idea to take the weed eater to my two dragon fruit vines that were growing nicely up some wood poles in the side yard. Sliced up both of them pretty good - completely severed the American Beauty from its base and sliced it up in a couple other places. Dark Star may or may not be a goner - nearly sliced through at the base. Didn't discover this until a week or two later, so I think the Beauty is beyond saving. All the segments are rather dried out and light - cut one off and put it in a pot, but it looks like it's back to square 1 with dragon fruit.

Can someone make me a sign in Creole that says don't cut here or something to that effect? These guys are dirt cheap but they are butchers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / south florida avocado recommendations...
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:38:07 PM »
Giving serious thought to chopping down the 30+ foot behemoth in the yard that only produces every three years and replacing it with two cado trees whose size I can manage. Rather than rely on the PIN site, figured I'd ask here.

Like the creamy and don't really want anything during mango season. Ideally want stuff for right about now and the Oct/Nov/Dec timeframe. Delicious and productive.

Thoughts?

Granted, carambola fruits so prolifically that losing some fruit to ants is not a huge deal. That said, anyone else have ants burrowing into carambola on the tree and basically eating the fruit from the inside out? We've had several fruit this year that basically collapse/disintegrate when touched due to being eaten from the inside. Kinda gross, but I guess that's life. Anyone with an effective ant control for trees with near mature fruit on?

Need some help here - we have a huge unknown avocado tree in the yard (must have been here at least a decade before we moved in). It makes delicious avocados in the October/November timeframe - produced a ton of them in 2010 when we moved in and then did not produce until last year (2013). The tree flowered profusely earlier this Spring, but now upon inspection of the tree, I see no fruits forming. Is this normal?

I'd hate to waste so much space in the yard (I could probably plant 3 - 4 trees in the space it takes up) for a tree that only produces every couple years.

Thanks to a visit to Zands' house over the weekend, I discovered that what I thought to be a Kari carambola I bought a couple years ago is actually something else (at this point, all signs point to Fwang Tung). Even though I still enjoy the fruit, that moment was like finding out my whole life has been a lie (e.g. Truman Show). Probably should have recognized it sooner - the fruit never oranges up, is not as long as Kari, etc.

Now I need to figure out what to do - I have 2 trees that were sold to me as Kari (by the same vendor at roughly the same time). One of them definitely is not. The other is huge and the fruit are still green, so can't quite figure it out yet. Also have an Arkin, so don't necessarily want yet another carambola, but at the same time don't want to dig up the fwang tung.

So how has your soul been crushed by discovering that you have something you didn't think you had? Is there a support group?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / LZ season over?
« on: July 12, 2014, 05:11:52 PM »
Was hoping to try my first LZ this season in the quest to figure out what's getting grafted on my beanstalk seedling tree. Doesn't seem like Zills is going to have any left, but I will give them a call tomorrow. Any leads in the Broward area?

My wife brought over a bunch of Hadens from her mom's house. The fruit is really covered in anthracnose - tree is probably 30 years old and has never been sprayed, so the stuff runs rampant.

We have a bunch of perfect clean Glenns ripening up in the garage and on the kitchen counter. Within a couple days of the Hadens being mixed among them, the Glenns are now getting covered in anthracnose. I always thought it only spread from tree to tree or tree to fruit, but never between picked fruit.

Now I'm worried about the composter. We've been throwing mango peels in there for a couple weeks now. Both Haden and Glenn. Not sure how resistant anthracnose is to heat, but the last thing I want is for this stuff to spread through fresh compost.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tried pink guava for the first time...
« on: June 27, 2014, 09:43:14 AM »
Neighbor was nice enough to bring one over. Let's just say I'm glad he only brought one.

It had a very pleasant/tropical aroma, but the taste and abundance of seeds in my mouth just did not combine for a pleasant experience. Glad I haven't planted one of these.

Here for a conference. Would be nice to pick some up from a local nursery.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Photo tour of the savemejebus yard
« on: May 31, 2014, 09:26:17 PM »
Giving the yard and trees some TLC today, so figured I'd snap a few pics of the collection.

Miracle fruit - great for sweetening up veggie juices.

Cogshall mango - did nothing for about 8 months and just now shot up a couple feet. Hoping for another flush this summer. A few white jade pineapples in the foreground and a dragon fruit peeking in too.

Mallika mango - couple months in the ground.

Seedling mango - about 4 years old. Parent is delicious, but heck if I know what this will taste like. Sentimental tree as my wife's dad potted it from his tree a few months before he died.

Glenn mango on steroids. Only about 3.5 years old. Has been a consistent producer since year 1.

A few glenn mangoes fattening up.

Yehuda loquat - for some reason, this one didn't produce a single fruit this year. Its sister gave us loads of fruit.

Arkin starfruit - planted a few months ago.

Arkin flowers and baby starfruit.

Kari starfruit - this little tree gave us more fruit last year than we could handle.

Kari flowering again.

Sweetheart lychee. Bought this from Mike (Bender's Grove) in a 25 gallon pot. NEVER AGAIN lol. That was more of a workout than I needed.

Hasya sapodilla - think we might be getting fruitlets but too early to tell.

Nam doc mai mango - just had a nice growth flush.

Mauritius lychee - just went in this past year so no fruit for a while.

Kent mango - couple years old. Last year was first fruiting and we only got 1 mango (which was half attacked by a squirrel). Tree was under siege by whitefly which thankfully is not a problem this year.

Couple kent mangoes fattening up.

Carrie mango - just flushed so happy to see it grow.

Big kari starfruit. Planted about the same time as the other one but three times the size.

Rosigold mango.

grumichama - young tree but I think I spotted a flower today.

What I think is a grumichama flower... we'll see.

The other yehuda loquat - lots of fruit last year.

Red jaboticaba. Planted a few months ago as a 7 gallon - hopefully will get fruit soon. It hasn't been too happy. Don't think I'm getting it enough water.

Super pickering mango. This little guy started out in a big pot and was doing nothing. Put it in the ground in a spot where a pink lemon was doing nothing and it has been growing like crazy.

Galaxy mango.

Sweetheart lychee - has been growing nicely. Wind protected spot, which I am sure is helping.

Blueberry!

One of four tiny blueberry bushes. Have gotten a few so far and they are delicious.

Dwarf mulberry - the kids love them.

Abiu from Noel (FloridaGreenMan)

Tiny little angie mango. Did not like this past winter but is recovering nicely.

UF Sun peach. Can't get the thing to branch out the other side. Probably need to do some serious pruning.

Indian Jujube. Getting this thing to grow up instead of sideways is going to be a challenge.

Malay apple. It has woken up recently and started growing. Only about a year old.

Coconut cream mango - in ground maybe a month or two.

Jaboticaba - presume sabara. Got some waiting to do.

Bigger mulberry trees. Again, the kids gobble them up so I rarely get to eat them. Produce pretty much year round though.

Passion fruit vine.

Humongous avocado tree. No idea what variety. Only tree that we didn't plant ourselves. Between what the squirrels got and what we got last year, it must have been hundreds of pounds.

useless pink lemon tree. Was in the ground and nearly died. Put it in the pot and still refuses to make fruit. Giving it another few months before its real estate goes to another tree.

Finally committed to planting a couple dragon fruit vines in the yard. Looking to pick up 2x plants of some combination of american beauty, physical graffitti, haley's comet, purple haze (or perhaps something else that is delicious and grows well in south Florida... really just going by the PIN website with these).

Does anyone have some cuttings they can part with? I see Florida Hill Nursery sells cuttings but they seem to be out of stock of everything but american beauty. Also not sure I entirely trust their designations.

98
Can't seem to find any information on how these trees grow "normally." This one is growing completely sideways - the trunk has basically decided to grow from the ground at a 45 degree angle. Is this normal? Do I need to lop this thing back to try to make it grow upward?

99
Just about giving up on the pink lemon that I pulled from the ground and potted. Thinking of putting an orange in its place, just not sure what grows best down here (eating over juicing).

Dad just got back from Brazil after a week visiting relatives. They were surprised when they went to the local market and found jaboticaba, as it's not usually in season until September/October. Apparently the growers have a drip irrigation system set up and that is now giving them two crops/year, so many of the juicy little fellas were feasted upon.

As part of compensation for picking him up from Miami at an ungodly time this morning, it's fresh jaboticaba for breakfast!
