Sierra Leone Mango Project On YouTube
« on: July 06, 2019, 11:50:06 AM »
Chris at Truly Tropical has become a tremendous friend and mentor to be this past 8 years.  It was mainly through her, plus Sheehan and Dr. Noris Ledesma’s efforts I was able to acquire the best of the best. Please share.

Thanks for the update. I can’t believe you fit all those bare root trees in one suitcase. Please keep us updated!

It was simply an amazing journey.  As children we know our parents love us but when they do something like this, volunteering their time, energy and skill with no payback for them, to enable a life long dream for you...then you really know.  I didn't mention my father in the video who was left with a ton of potting soil to clean up on his own (35 trees x 3 gallons = 105 gallons of potting soil removed).  Again, huge effort, no thanks sought, no visibility just sheer love.

Great project,  I just watched the video.    I am curious,  what varieties did you choose for this project.

Very nice project!! Do you plan to increase this mango collection? Wouldn't it be easier to import just scions instead of whole plants?

I would suggest also importing other species, so that they later have fruit year round. So did I donate all kind of seeds to West Africa (you could import just seeds instead of whole plants).

Thanks Felipe!  Your suggestions are spot on.  My daughter and I visited Malaysia last summer and sent to courier packages full of biodiversity - durian, annona, terap, salak, rambutan, cempedek etc.  Many were killed by carelessness - fire used to clear land of weeds - and they set us back quite a lot.  But we perservere.

Others have also suggested scions and its a good idea.  The only problem is my grafting skills aren't yet proficient enough.  In time.

Thanks Doc.

If anyone missed it, we were on local radio (see video here) raising awareness for our fundraiser (now closed).  The current gofundme link is still open however.

Regarding the introduction of new ssp I would consider two things:

- Choose ssp which are not sensitive, like many ultra-tropicals, which are very finicky regarding water, ph, soil, temp fluctuations, etc. Since apparently there is nobody over there who has the same dedication for the plants as you, better choose plants that do not need that much care

- ssp which do not fruit at the same as mango will get more attention by locals. For example black zapote, green zapote, ross, abiu, caimito, artocarpus, atemoya, a. reticulata, casimiroa tetrameria, etc... sapodilla and mamey fruit at the same time but are a must  :)

Regarding the grafting skills, its all about practice  ;)
