Cultivar of mango called "Wise", has anyone heard of it?
« on: February 14, 2013, 12:50:13 PM »
Supposedly a good cultivar called "Wise" or "Weiss" that was lost over the years...has anyone heard of it??

I have limited info...but I'm curious about this variety.  I might want to graft some this year.

Harry...

I bet that's the one.

Is it very rare? or was it almost lost?

Wise and Eweis are different mangoes.

Wise is from Miami, I believe, and was part of the post-1930s boom in mango cultivar introduction in south Florida. Many of those cultivars are no longer propagated even though many had good eating qualities. Its a decent if unremarkable mango, but does have some fiber; I have a small one growing.

Eweis is a rather small, tasty, richly flavored  if ugly looking mango from Egypt that has adapted well to Florida.

I would not say its real late though I am going by poor memory.  If I am recalling correctly, it is the later part of July to near early August.  Not to disappoint you but as for the taste, as I recall, it was neither memorable nor lousy...just an average mango...nothing to write home about.  Much better out there though I am sure it will appeal to some.  Am I being a little redundant??

Picked up a couple of Wise-es at the Taste of the Tropics show put on by the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit club last weekend at the Port St Lucie Botanical gardens.  The club picked up a bunch of different mangos earlier at the Fruit and Spice park Mango Mania event.

Ate the first one and found the flavor interesting.  Orange flesh but very firm.  Very different from any other mango I've tasted.  Rate it good - not great.  The yellow one to the right was not IDed - any guesses?  Already ate the Oro, Sensation, Duncan and a few other unknowns.  Nothing exceptional except the Duncan.

TopTropicals.com copied Squam's post on wise mango cv almost verbatim lol.

Unless.....Squam works with TT ?

Though I don't doubt the info as Squam is very knowledgable on mangoes, TT copy n paste is really lazy and sleazy. Nice operation you got going there. Makes me begin to wonder if these cvs (Himsagar a recent addition on TT mango list) are even the real thing.

I definitely do not work for TT, and they have quoted my old wiki articles verbatim before too.
