Flowers on Russell's Sweet and Luc's Mexican Garcinias
« on: May 16, 2018, 05:52:01 AM »

My female Russell's Sweet Garcinia has flowers and unfortunately the male tree beside it doesn't have flowers. Without pollination the fruit are small being only golf ball size when they get ripe. They often have one or two seeds that germinate and presambly grow only females.

When pollinated the fruit are large and sweet.

My Luc's Mexican Garcinia also has flowers and at a small size and young age. Maybe next year I have a Garcinia showdown between an Asian and American champ.

Hopefully ants are a suitable pollinator for  Luc's Garcinia

Congrats Mike! Hopefully they take, aI also have a new Garcinia that Luc brought from Brasil but he mixed up the seeds, so is unidentified, it flowered by first time two months ago and drop flowers, now is starting to flowering again let's see... My Russell's are on the ground now the largest at one feet but growing steady, new shots every month, how tall were yours when flowered first time?

Ruseell's sweet are about 5 ft (1.55m) tall when they first flowered. I do have lots of pollinators so hopefully that wont be an issue.
There must be more good Garcinias out there. I have heard whispers that a large fruited south American Garcinia called lindero has a good flesh yield, taste good and might even have larger fruit than the Mexican.

Just a reminder of the Russell's Sweet that initially was thought to be a G.dulcis but it is different in a number of respects including the distinctive foliage.

Thanks for posting that link, Mike.  I think I had seen that article before but didn't realize it was Russell's Sweet that they were talking about.

Looking forward to that Garcinia showdown ...

Just curious if anyone has experience with minimum temps these Russell’s garcinia can tolerate?

Thanks,
