Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting mangos to make them dwarf?

THanks for the links. So, it looks like it might work. From what i have read, pickering seems to beamong thesmallest of mango trees. I think that it might work if somebody grafts a large mango tree onto a pickering.

When somebody says that grafting a full size onto a dwarf can lead to a full sized tree, does that mean that the scion influences the rootstock to become vigourus and grow large roots?

thanks

Ok, so this question has been bugging me for a while, and i have done a great many searches about this topic but i can't seem to fing much info about this.

basically, my question is, what happens if you take a full size cultivar and graft it onto a dwarf root stock?

This is done quite frequently with citrus, where a scion from a large, standard tree is taken and grafted onto a dwarf stock, such as Flying Dragon. then, the new tree only reaches a max of 8 to ten feet,
so now, say i was to take seeds from a pickering mango (they are polyemryonic, right?) now,if i was to graft on a scion of a mango tree that grows large and full sized, like alphonso or something, and graft it on to a seedling, what would happen? would the resulting plant be dwarfed of full sized of a failed graft or what?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your input. Just a couple of questions...

One, when people talk about lychees, what do they mean when they say that the lychee has a "medicinal" taste? i have heard that mauritus and hak ip have that taste, but what is it exactly?

Two, does the pickering mango really have a "coconut flavor?" What o they mean when they say that? it's just a personal preference that i like mangos that taste like, well, mangoes.

Thanks!

Hello, this is my first post here. I got recommended to come here from the people at Gardenweb.

I am looking into buying some tropical trees to grow here, maybe. I don't know if I will, but I am considering it and rolling the thought around in my head, and knowing me, probably will within the next couple of months.. However, there is a catch. Strictly container only. I live in long island, not exactly tropical paradise. So i need help picking out some cultivars.

First; mango.

I am looking into growing a condo mango here. I am looking into buying this from Pine island nursery; I have heard good reviews about them. I am debating between Pickering and Nam Doc Mai. Which do you think is better and why? Also, how does the Mallika Mango do in pots? PIN has it listed as a condo mango. How tall does it get? From my understanding, the NDM and Pickering grow rather small, which is why I am considering them. I haven't found any information about the height of the Mallika, though, just that it is a "dooryard tree." Other suggestions welcome :)

Second; carambola (starfruit)

Of the varieties they (PIN) offer, which is the best? Also, I can only grow ONE, so self-pollination is a MUST. On their website, they have the following varieties listed:
Varieties: Arkin, Fwang Tung, Kari, Sri Kembangan

Third; lychee

I was just wondering whether it would be practical to grow a lychee in a container. If they do grow well (or at least will produce fruit), then which variety should I get? Taste is more important to me than yield. I have heard good things about Mauritius, Brewster, and Kaimana. Other suggestions are always welcome. PIN has the following varieties on their website:

'Bengal' 'Brewster' 'Early Large Red' 'Emperor'

'Hak Ip ' 'Kaimana' 'Kwai Mai Pink' 'Mauritius'

'No Mai Tsze' 'Ohia' 'Sweet Cliff' 'Sweet Heart'™

And of course, if you have suggestions for any other tropical those grow well in containers, I am always open to suggestions :) I am planning to get a few citrus trees as well.

Thanks for your help
