Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Questions about Santol
« on: November 16, 2016, 08:17:58 AM »
I don't think the seeds are technically edible. I've read they have insecticidal properties.  I don't believe there is any digestion and seeds pass through.  They have an incredibly hard shell. The size of the seeds is maybe where the edibility comes into question? The smaller native santol seed is much smaller than the Bangkok seed and I read people eat and pass them. Bangkok santol seed would be like swallowing the end of a fork  :P

No, someone said it's called Pantropicals? It's the fruit stand off Cubles in Bokeelia.  Less than a mile from Fruitscapes.  They have an excellent variety of fruit when in season.  Have been able to try Imbe, Abiu, Rollinia, custard apple, canistel, santol, kwai muk & many others. I've missed a ton too because it's very popular and almost impossible to find what they have anywhere else that I know of? Very nice place.

Yes! Everyone around here knows the place in Bokeelia. I saw the plant when it was starting to fruit a couple months ago. The guy is amazing at growing.  Had no idea they would even grow in our area? He has some really amazing plants

So... I got the coolest gift today! Salak grown here in Florida. I'm sure many on this forum have tried it, but I figured this might be one I'd never get to. Really good? Not incredibly sweet, but like a cross of Monstera & pineapple

Wow, your tree looks amazing! I love this forum. Your plant with flowers at 4 years is opposite what I've read. I heard they were very slow to grow, fruit and flower. I'm definitely planting seeds now, even without fruit it's a beautiful plant and I'd like to try pushing it in my zone. Thanks for the pictures!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Giant FuYu persimmon taste
« on: October 13, 2016, 08:08:58 PM »
Hi, right now I have Fuyu, Chocolate, Coffee cake, Tanenashi & Hachiya. They have all been planted right around the last year so I haven't had any ripen on my trees. I've been able to try them from the farmer's market and Fruitscapes. They really are excellent even when super firm. My Fuyu tree flowered this year and I let it dry out, dropped all the flowers but saved the tree. We have a 4 ft. & a 8 ft. tree of Fuyu so I'm counting on fruit next year  :)
