Squirrels
« on: May 21, 2020, 02:02:03 PM »
I hate squirrels, they have been digging up my pots and destroying my seeds. Today they destroyed all my seedling plants and recently potted seeds. How can I get rid of them?

Pellet gun! And that’ll only control them.

I put my seeds in pots then put a wire cage over them so the squirrels can't eat them.

I hate them as well.  So far they've eaten 6 of my Pickering mangos.  I tried poisoning them with zinc phosphide which didn't work.  Tried spraying the mangos with a peppermint oil concoction mixed with cayenne and didn't work.  Next thing I'm looking into is an ultrasonic noise repellent.  I'm not sure if they're effective, but I'm willing to try.

I'm glad it's just the Pickering and they haven't touched the Sweet Tart.  I've waited 3 or 4 years for my Sweet Tart to finally produce and would be devastated to lose any to them.

I would love to hear how the noise repellant works

Squirrelinator trap with bread in it.  And shoot them if you can also.

yes, I've seeen a large cage structure made of PVC 3ftH x 4 ft W/L and covered with chicken wire which can be easily lifted over for working.

I jinxed myself.  Today I went outside and they decided not to continue eating a half eaten Pickering, but instead went for a new Sweet Tart. I picked up a squirrel trap asap from Harbor Freight.  Fingers crossed I catch the critter..this is ridiculous.

Squirrels are a problem for seeds? Well that explains why one of my seeds never sprouted..... should have thought of the squirrels...

Welp, guess its time for indoor germination then.

yeah, they completely destroyed nearly all of my seedlings, and sprouts, I always thought that they would only go for fruit, but they seem to like seedling mangoes too, they're obnoxious.......

one time, our grapes were about ready to pick. So we decided to pick them on the weekend as we were busy during the week. Comes Saturday, the grapes were completely gone, about 2-3 buckets.  It was as though they were eavesdropping on us and beat us to it. I think they have an extended family to raid the grape vines.  Grandpa and ma, papa and mama, auntie and uncles, and little ones too all work together.

put chicken wires over your pot. Or if you have thorny stuffs like blackberries vine dried up and dead branches from finger lime tree, i always save it up and put it on the top of the pot.  Trust me, this works 100% , they won't dig the pot anymore.

2-3 buckets of grapes sounds like masked critters visited you every night, sometimes the whole family comes for a party while you sleep.

I use the squirrel version of social distancing... Keep my seeds and seedlings out of their reach.
Also... having 2 dogs and a cat on the premises probably helps.

I protect the squirrel on my land from my cat .
Sometimes the cat corners the squirrel on a branch wich she cant leave safely because the cat is waiting on the ground.
Then rhe squirrel starts to bark at the cat and i know its time to get the cat out from there so the squirrel can move to another tree.
Its an endangered specie of squirrel that was extinct in the past 40 years in my area.Long ear european squirrel.

I protect fruit with plastic clamshells and/or plastic bags along with trapping squirrels. It's been a challenge all these many years to harvest anything from my yard!

Just nabbed my first squirrel after losing 2 Sweet Tarts.  Used a squirrel trap from Harbor & Freight.  Caught the bugger, drove to a park and released him along with his half eaten mangos.  Hopefully that takes care of the issue, but I'm ready if there's more haha!

We've got somewhere around 800 clamshells of various sizes. Without them the pests would nab most everything. Iguanas are the bigger problem compared to squirrels. Took out a couple today with the pellet rifle. Hopefully that scares the others away for a week.

Resorted to clam shelling my cados. Wife says it looks whack, and it does.

With enduring pandemic and uncertainty regarding meat supplies, beginning to look at these critters in a different way.

Tonights Specials?:

Mango Infused Varmint with coconut curry and papaya salad

Jabo Rat-ratatouille

Passion Opossum Pot Pie

...maybe all is not lost.
