Thai Apple (Apple ber, Thai Jujube)
« on: October 09, 2018, 07:56:39 PM »
I live in Huntington Beach, Ca., and I have a Thai Apple (not the traditional Chinese jujube - tag simply says Thai jujube) that has been in the ground for 4 years.  Last year was the first year it produced fruit, but in limited quantities.  When ripe, the fruit has shiny pale green skin and juicy white/sweet flesh.  This year, the tree is absolutely loaded with blossoms, but so far the blossoms have not begun to turn into fruit. It's been my understanding that this variety is self pollinating, as evidenced by fruit generation last year.  I've searched the Internet for information regarding this variety, but with no success.  First question: Has anyone on this forum had similar problems getting their tree to produce fruit?  Second question: Can anyone provide information or a link to articles regarding the growing of this type of tree?

Put Thai Giant jujube in the search and you will find an abundance of info

In Florida I usually get fruit around Xmas and mine are flowering now as well

Last August, my two Thai Giants were loaded with blossoms, until Hurricane Irma came along and blew them all off. The storm didn't damage the trees, but I got no fruit last December.
They are now blossoming again, and barring anything unforeseen, should produce this winter.

My friend has this one. I am not sure how old it is but it is taller than his house’s roof. He airlayered a few and gave me one. Last year I tasted it is very good and it is better than the Taiwanese one. His plant currently has fruits. My small plant is flowering.

Thai jujube is a variaty of indian jujube, Ziziphus mauritiana. It survives light frost, very drought resistant, and the fruit is better taste than Chinese jujube.
Depending on the graft you have they are self pollinating with continuous fruiting, even in a small pot during the winter. Very resistant plant.
This is mine in a 2 liters bag. Flowers and fruits on the same young tree.

Thank you for the link.  Very informative articles.  Thank you to the other responses to my questions, especially for the botanical name (Ziziphus mauritiana) for my specific tree.
