Cherapu Seeds finally sprouting! Garcinia prainiana
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:33:59 PM »
Ordered about 100 seeds from Jim West, and  planted them in late July.

They are now popping up...only about 3 out of 100 I can see sprouting so far.

Wondering who else has these sprouting?? and where did u buy them, and when did u plant them...and in what medium?

I used a mix of pine bark, peat moss, and a high quality potting soil from faffard.

I've been drenching them with Fe Turfrpro, and rolled them in Agripro (100% humic acid, organic product essentially dehydrated turfpro)

I'm so darn excited!! Now I have to keep them warm and happy through this winter...I've been dreaming of fruiting these in pots...and I want to have at least 20 trees or so...to call my own...and to eat from!

Wow 20 trees! I don't have nor have I tried it, but just on the bases of that statement I have to add that to my "Plants to acquire list"

u need a male and female..if it was self fertile I'd only have about 10.

I wouldn't mind 19 female trees and one beastly stud cherapu.

In the book Florida's Best Fruiting Plants: Native and Exotic Trees, Shrubs, and Vines by Charles Boning, it says a male branch can be grafted onto the female plant.  I will take one as a consulting fee.

I've been planning on this grafting of cherapu already.

not only to make available male/female plants, but also with hopes of cutting time to fruit in half.

not the best pics, but they get me smiling!

these are hard to see coming up, because the sprouts are black!!

I can only see about 2 or 3 so far...I hope at least 50 more pop up!!!

just went to check on these up close, and I counted about 10 that are germinating...So now I'm really happy.

It has taken forever it seems...i've been requesting the seeds for 3yrs, and I finally got them...now it took 3 months for germination...and I'm going to have to wait another 3-5yrs? for flowers!

I'm going to be trying to speed these up (carefully), with every trick in the book...micros, macros, foliars, drenches, uppers downers lefters righters...what ever it takes.

these trees are like race horses to me.  I'm ready to juice em up, to make them win the race to fruition..LOLOL

I have them sprouting, in my dreams.
Jim always has cool stuff... I never managed to persuade him to sell me whole fruits though.

Closest thing I've got is some Garcinia magnifolia that are popping up.  A generous friend in your neck of the woods sent me seeds.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

never considered planting these seeds in your dreams as a medium...but I bet they'd be healthy and fruit fast...the only problem would be transplant shock.   the cherapus would get shattered if I tried to dig them up!!

Ordered about 100 seeds from Jim West, and  planted them in late July.

Is that a normal germination period for a Garcinia, or is there no typical period?

I'm not sure if there is a single typical period.  Some I've had sprout fast, others have taken ~9 months.  With the ones that were painfully slow for me typically I planted them after the warm times had past and they only sprouted when it got warm again.

Congrats on the seedling Cherapu! From the description of the fruit, it sounds like another great container fruiting plant to grow. Are you going to have some of the seedlings in air pruning pots?

I think I have 4 of these popping up from the seeds I got from you. Hoping the other 6 will still come up.
I germinated them in straight peat. Going to move them to one gal pots this weekend.

U got seeds from me?  ???  :-[

haha...I couldn't remember who  I sent them to!

You are lucky because I didn't share to many of these with other growers...and I did set the price quite high to resell them...but I always try to give extras, and compensate for my awful prices...LOL

I'm please to hear you've got germination before the winter, and 4 seeds of 10 so far!  I have planted out about 80, and only 10 or so have popped up.

Your chances are quite good so far, you should have a male and female!  Only about 5 yrs before you might taste some cherapu....in the mean time and between time, keep them warm and happy.

they appreciate a good amount of shade (first 2-3yrs I think).

keep me posted on your progress!

Thanks for the update.

Can't wait to see the results in the air pruning.  You intend to use the pine bark, peat moss, and a high quality potting soil from faffard mix? Sounds like a great mix, I use similar as well! I am starting to really like this pine bark, coco coir, charcoal mix for the air pruning containers. The results have been getting better, especially after the pine bark starts to decompose somewhat.

8 is the magic number!

you should have very very high chance of having male and female

hopefully you get 6 females, 2 males!

and not the other way around!

or better yet, a rare self pollinating androgynous cherapu!

.best of luck!
