I mentioned I was growing these in another post and figured I would post some pics of progress...not many bees around so I've been attempting to hand pollinate

For a while I didn't think I was going to get any fruit...all the flowers kept dropping...let's just hope this rain we've been getting doesn't wash out the flavor...

Update of my melons....the tendrils dried so I yanked a couple this morning...I cut into the flesh and was expecting a more darker color orange...they weren't as sweet as expected...I think the vines rotted before the fully delevoped..but still sweet enough to eat....the first pic is of one I pulled a couple days ago...the others are pics of the melons pulled this morning....

The sweetest part of a watermelon is dead center. If I had one of your watermelons I would eat the flesh and juice the rind with a little lemon, lime or ginger. They look great and seeded too!

Mike - love the little crocodile pond in the back!

 ;D

Watermelon, I find, are so hard to pick when at
the peak of ripeness, although you didn't really
have much of a choice in your situation.

Will you try them again next year?

aka a canal. We have more canals than Venice and you know what the favorite alligator food is? Little dogs that get too curious.

The watermelon was much better after I chilled it in the fridge all day...good crisp clean flavor..but I imagine I'll try a different variety next year and be more selective with my vine growth....

Too much of those yellow fleshed watermelon may have certain side effects:

An important quote from that article "Citrulline is found in all colors of watermelon and is highest in the yellow-fleshed types, said Penelope Perkins-Veazie, a USDA researcher in Lane, Okla."

The main side effect of watermelons is that you spend most of your time going to the toilet to pee, not so great for romance in my opinion!  :o
Watermelons have a lot of nutrition spread across the whole spectrum of nutrients. Most people think it's just water, but that's not the case. Remember reading an article saying that watermelon is better for your health than spinach. It's also great for women that are about to give birth...eases labor. So there's something to the saying "she looks like she swallowed a watermelon".  ;)

Good looking watermelon. The flesh color seems to be a bit like champagne melons.

Lime is good to squeeze a bit over watermelon flesh. Plus sprinkle a tiny bit of sea salt can also bring out the watermelon sweetness.

Juicing watermelon rind with apple and a bit of ginger also works out 8)

I just remembered my grandfather used to pickle the watermelon rinds. In the good olde days they took advantage of everything. Me, from the me generation, i have yet still to try making watermelon rind pickles.  :'(

I obtained Golden Midget watermelon seeds.  The rind turns yellow when ripe.  Genius!
Also got some Charentais melon seeds

I usually make my own pickles every year but I had a bad season of powdery mildew and didn't treat it aggressively enought and lost my vines to it...also the borers got a couple vines...kinda depressing when they get the few you got...but I'll try again next year...

I started eating a lot more watermelons after I got kidney stones (OUCH)! I don't want those again and watermelon is supposed to be good for stones...

Watermelon is also a great way to come off complete food fasting

Paul Bragg used to do 10 day watermelon diets. All he ate was watermelon plus drank the juice from the rind. I bought a large watermelon a few days ago and everything gets eaten including juicing the rind.

A longer water fast can be bad for many who are nutritionally deficient. But no harm in a three day water fast then three-five-seven day juice fast to break it and ease back into eating. If I had cancer and had decent weight on me I would go on a 90 day "juice feast". There are many internet references to it. It means you go on fresh veg and fruit juices for up to 90 days but you don't try to limit your juice intake. You become a liquidarian. I did this 45 days or so once. No solids and no proteins unless you take in some spirulina  http://www.juicefeasting.com/JuiceFeastingIntroduction/JuiceFeastingBeforeAfter/tabid/306/Default.aspx
