Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to water & when not
« on: December 03, 2012, 01:38:12 PM »
After so many years growing tropical fruit I am still in the dark about this subject . I never got a satisfactory answer in other groups , so I am trying again here .

Our dry season is here , for the next 7 months , and I will have to water . Putting in a drip line .

I learned the hard way that watering litchee when in flower is a NO NO ! Now that a lot of Eugenias and Myrciarias are starting to flower I am affraid watering will provoke growth and abort the flowers .

Your input will be appreciated , thanks .

Maybe a little OT but again I'll have a bumper crop of black sapote , several restaurants and bars are willing to buy if I can come up with a recipe for a cocktail , they love the idea of offering their customers a black drink . Has any body experienced with this fruit besides for desert and pie filling ?

What's the problem with my caimitos , still no fruit or flowering after close to 8 years ( at 300 meters above sea level , 20 degrees north ) trees that were planted at sea level have been fruiting for 4 - 5 years now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A garden that feeds you
« on: November 11, 2012, 01:12:16 PM »
Last year on TV we had all these programs about armageddon etc.., this year it's about preppers . So , walking trough the orchard , I realized if the SHTF I would still starve to dead even with hundreds of fruit trees . I am not a prepper but rising food prices scare me a little . Not even touching the safety of the food we buy....GMO , pesticides , contamination and name it....

I am sure some of you are growing other things also besides fruit . For the moment I only have yuca and sweet potatoes ( camote ) What is the deal with this Taro , some sites say that all parts of the plant are poisonous ?

What else do you guys grow or suggest .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Water-pressure a little OT
« on: October 18, 2012, 09:13:21 PM »
This is for the engineers in the group .

I just realize that i will have to install a water-tank ( thinking of 1000 liters ) on the new lot , no rain for the next 8 months .

How high do I have to place it to have enough pressure by gravitation to make several sprinklers work at the same time ?

Another possibility would be a pressure pump fed by a solar panel ...not familiar at all with these and also probably expensive here in Mexico .

Drip irrigation is another option but it is gonna be a mess for 2 reasons :

- Lots of impurities in the water coming down from higher up in the mountains . A filter can remediate but then I do need a pump I think .
- Several hundreds of Zingiberales and a minimum of another 50 fruit trees will be planted , can you imagine the web of tubing in the ground...

I am counting on you guys and girls...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What to plant between rows of Heliconia
« on: October 14, 2012, 07:57:07 PM »
What I am looking for is a fast growing edible fruit , or similar , that will also provide some shade and if possible can improve the soil .

First I was thinking of Papaya , not good since they deplete the soil ....on the other hand they can provide income .
Then bananas...risk of getting virus in the soil....I never had this problem so far but people warned me about this .
Then moringa ....not really familiar with it , have one in too much shade and not doing well .

Any other options ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / No name fruit
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:52:15 PM »

Size of an olive , slightly acid nice flavor 1mm pulp , seed has a semi hard coat see right below in pic .
First made me think of some type of mamoncillo or Talisia but shape , size and pulp color is not correct .
The fruits are past ripeness and peel is still green .
Was brought from a little village 5 hours away , a cuban guy living there said they have this also in Cuba but could not remember the name.

Any idea ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Marang , different leaves.
« on: October 07, 2012, 01:31:50 PM »
I have about 7 - 8 trees in the ground , one of them has entire elliptical leaves not like the usual trilobed type .
This tree also is a lot more vigorous than the others . Could that be some other variety ?
I must say that the marangs come from 4 different places , Ecuador - Honduras - Borneo - Malaysia .

« on: September 30, 2012, 07:08:10 PM »
Garcinia brasiliensis , today's harvest .

Why the most grateful ? Fruits year round , no problem tree and stays relatively small , can be kept in a big planter. Nice and sweet when orange colored .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tell me this is Santol
« on: September 30, 2012, 06:33:11 PM »
For unknown reason my 2 Santol died a few years ago . The trees were already 4 - 5 meters tall . I kinda blame it on being right next to the dispersing area of a septic tank ???
Fortunately I gave a plant to a fellow collector , this has flowered 2 x no fruit set yet.
Today I got a call from a guy that I met several years ago asking me to stop by and identify some of the fruit trees I gave him.

To my surprise the first I noticed was ( see pic of the leave ) an other Santol , gorgeous tree , 6 - 7 meters tall , he said this one also flowered 2 x , no fruit set .

Now I want to make some airlayers , not the easiest on these trees , appears to take about 6 months for the roots to grow .

Is there any other tree this could be grafted on ???

Ha Ha....my friend a Vietnamese grower here ( export of veggies and some tropical fruit ) said it couldn't be done certainly not at my 300 meters above sea level . Yesterday I had my first homegrown red freestone rambutan . Noting on the yellow yet.

« on: August 27, 2012, 04:47:28 PM »

Seed collected in 2006 in Lancetilla - Honduras , got mixed up with other seeds , now that the tree is about 6 meter and has flowered , no fruit set , I think it is time I put a name on it .

The flower and leaf made me think of a Canistel , what do you think it could be ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lecythis sp
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:26:55 PM »
Going over the list of seedlings that I could plant on the new lot I have a few doubts ...

1 ) The Lecythis I have , no idea which one - the pods were very small like 10 cm , is really slow growing .
2 ) Kola nut
3 ) Marula , are they really worth it ?

Thanks for your input.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Round up alternatives
« on: August 22, 2012, 09:03:59 PM »
How would you clear/clean a piece of jungle , all trees except a large clump of bamboo have been removed , these will have to be taken out with a bulldozer .

What I want is a perfectly clean piece of land , just soil , no weeds or similar . I never used any pesticides in the orchard , so I don't wanna start now.....

Cutting the whole area with machete and covering it with black plastic is my first idea , or pulling the weeds by hand 2nd , any other options ????

I want to do this fast , taking advantage of the rainy season to plant new stuff .
