Pink Pineapples are finally available for purchase!
« on: October 16, 2020, 11:06:11 AM »
I've been waiting for this for almost 7 years now (http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=8308.0) and they are finally available!

They decided to go with the name Pinkglow which I think sounds better than the previous name, Rose.

The pink probably came from pink slime being injected into it

Heard it is mostly sweet, perhaps no acidity. "Like cotton candy" was what I was told.

While I like sour tastes, excited to try this one out.

I think there are ways to still grow a plant from a partial crown but since I think this pineapple is patented, we are probably not allowed to grow the crown even it was attached.

I'm hoping the website description is wrong and instead it just tastes like a good pineapple and not some artificial cotton candy flavor.

Haha, it is definitely a posibility.

I think I might buy one this next week. I will post a review when I do.

Looks cool. Whatever it takes to get Sheehan to add some fruit to his diet.

Looks pretty cool although there is no way that I am paying $49 for some pineapples ;)

I got one at The Boys Farmer Market had last Sunday for $4.99 (without top).

It was low acid, but also not super sweet. Just kind of water down tasting pineapple. They said it was being grown in Puerto Rico, and was under their labeling (not Pinkglow).

Wow. What a price difference. I am going to see if I am brave enough to go into The Boys to buy one.

Was any of the crown intact or was it fully removed?

Did you notice any seeds under the skin?

I almost did. I am glad FLNative posted.

About 1/2 inch of the crown intact:

I didn't notice (or know to looked for) seeds under the skin.  They were selling them individually but were packaged in boxes of two under the counter.

Most places where del Monte grow there pineapples at there are tons of humming birds that pollinate the pineapple flowers so it's possible the pink pineapple could have seeds. But not sure they would grow true or not

Yeah, these are grown in Costa Rica. Most Costa Rican pineapples I buy do have seeds that's why I was asking.

That was my reaction first, but then I remembered purchasing a $100 bottle of champagne once to bring as a New Year's gift to my gf's family.  It was yellow and had a rooster on it, the bottle was empty within minutes of being opened, and I don't even drink.  So I'm curious to try this fruit!  If it doesn't become available locally, I'll purchase one in a few months when I get together with some friends of mine. :)

It does seem like more of a novelty, and the marketing suggests it is intended to be served with adult beverages.

Also, it appears purchasing any pineapples direct from the growers are just as expensive.  I've always wondered why - is it the shipping?  Or is there more to it?

It is dangerous just to drive by the Boys, as their cliental drives their cars as bad as their shopping carts. Steel toe shoes are recommended.

OT, alas, but doesn't this look somehow suspiciously like a ham?

Well, I know that it really isn't one but wow, what a fruity doppelgänger!

Cheers!
