Wich exotic fruit trees for northern Europe??
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:14:07 AM »
Hello everyone. :)

I just bought a strawberry guava, wich was grown in England. The seller keeps his own tree inside in winter and outside during the summer (greenhouse). Its fruits and does well.

Now, wich other exotic fruit trees would do equally well here in northern Europe?

My own digging through the internet has resulted in this list of possible candidates: Blackberryjam fruit, Naranjilla, Cabelluda, Feijoa, longan, Peanut butter fruit, loquat, Grumichama, Achachairu, Sugar apple, Acerola, Lucuma, Pitomba, Jujube, Icaco, Papaya, Babaco, Jaboticaba, Blue jaboticaba.

What do you guys think?

Kind regards Anders.
Kind regards Anders.

You could also try cherimoya, black sapote, white sapote, goumi, so shan, medlar, quince. There also some bananas from Sikkim and Darjeeling that can take quite a bit of cold.

They will be kept at 22 degrees celsius during the winter months. Black sapote would be fantastic if possible! :)
Kind regards Anders.

Black sapote fruits here up to 2000 ft. (650m) elevation. So it takes more cold than is commonly thought.

Is that a special strain? Or just the common one?

Loquat is an apple& pear relative that might be cold tolerant enough for you.

22 C in the winter, you got a heated greenhouse? Sounds like you can try anything tropical/sub tropical with those temps.

Going through the list, I would eliminate some of the fruits on taste, fruit to seed ratio, and production. Dragon Fruits are always a rewarding container crop, with top tier fruit. Loquats and some of the other fruits listed, I would say are second tier fruits.

Personally I would only grow them if I had the extra room, after the top tier fruits Dragon Fruit, Mango, Cherimoya, etc..
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

If you can keep them warm and humid, my favorite container tropical fruit is the miracle fruit.  They are fairly consistent in bearing fruit, heavier in the winter, and though the fruit aren't large or tasty (on their own) they have a huge effect!  They are fun to share with others (especially since outside the tropics, most people have never had one) and can make the fruit from your local market taste a bit better in the middle of winter.  They are also easy to keep small unlike some of the other tropicals.

Hej Anders,
