Bignay, and help me pick some plants
« on: June 24, 2017, 09:47:58 AM »
First, i have a question about Bignay
i searched all over, and cant find   much on frost tolerance /zones.
anyone have 1st hand knowledge ?

It is hardy to zone (UK) 10 and is frost tender.
http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Antidesma+bunius

 Will stand light frosts.
http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/antidesma-bunius-bignay-seeds

this says zone 9
https://mygardenofdelights.com/antidesma-bunius-bignay-bignai-plant.html

i read conflicting reports as to whethere it needs a second plant for fruit ?
also
i got cuttings from someone a while back
is this bignay ?

next question is...
i want to get 2 to 3 of plants from mygardenofdelights.com

out of these
what would be your favorite as far as fruit taste
and production ?
a long fruiting season is a big plus, but, only if the flavor is at least decent.

Campomansia liniatifolia, milky guava,
Dillenia indica, elephant apple,
Dovyalis hybrid, tropcial apricot prodigal
Governor's Plum  Flacourtia indica,
Pseudanamomis umbellifera, monos plum
Garcinia xanthochymus
Garcinia dulcis

and of these 3
are any of them any good as fruits
which is best ?

Coccoloba diversifolia, piegeon plum
Coccoloba uvifera, sea grape
Chrysobalanus icaco, cocoplum

cheers
Brad

Dillinia indica is sour and cannot be eaten.
Governor's plum - mediocre fruit.
Garcinia xanthocymus - sour and when very ripe slightly sweet.
Garcinia dulcis - sour /sweet

Elephant apple can be eaten but its not recommended.   Tree is beautiful but large.  Not something recommended to be grown in a pot or grown in OP's location.

I have a bignay/antidesma here, and while I can't speak to zone issues (it's happy here in Zone 11), it doesn't seem to need more than one plant to fruit. Although weirdly I never saw flowers on the plant, it did make tiny little baby fruitlets recently. They haven't grown to any size yet, and most fell off (which is likely best for the plant because it's still fairly young), but they look like fruit, not flowers, to me. And there certainly isn't another one of its species anywhere within a few miles of here. Initially, it made many rows of them. So I'm looking forward to large crops of fruit in the future!

was it from seed ? How old and large is it ?

its no real rush with the bignay, as i have several fruit trees larger, many fruiting,
and lots of seedlings that will take years, but, thats what its all about :)
i can wait, i just dont want to wait and then find out i needed 2 plants...

that pic is from a cutting /trade
i actually have another that just popped up, that i grew from seed- (pretty sure its Bignay)
 - so, i might have 2 plants after all.

hope you get fruit soon
keep us posted.

Actually, I got it from Plantogram. They don't say much with the description, just that its a 3-gal. It's been in-ground only about 7 months. Size now is maybe 3.5 or 4 ft, and it seems to bush out readily. So far, a healthy plant that does not seem to expect much in terms of special care or good soil, etc. I have it out in an area where it gets virtually no help whatsoever, and it seems happy anyway.
