Lucuma Seedling Flowering
« on: August 09, 2019, 04:11:57 PM »
My lucuma that I started from seed in 2014 is flowering for the first time. Does anyone else here have any experience with seedling lucumas? How was your fruit-set the first year flowering? Did any hold?

Have a very nice flowering and fruiting Lucuma.  It is about 15 years old, approx 1 fruit per 25 flowers in our climate.  Tried artificial pollination without success.  Fruits are nice.

I was surprised to see mine start flowering so soon, i’ve read that it can take 12-15 years from seed to fruit. I have my fingers crossed that I get one this first year.

That's awesome, especially with how young your Lucuma is.  I have a baby Lucuma seedling, bought recently, which has experienced minor new leaf growth only twice, in the last few months.  Are they normally slow-growing?  Don't know how well they grow in Florida, just happy to have one, in the first place.  Want to grow a Canistel (Egg Fruit), as well.  Heard they taste similar, but there are so many varieties available here.

I have two small seedling lucuma “twins” that came from one seed, that I just split-up and repotted. These are a year or two old (I didn’t plant the seed, I bought it already growing in the pot), they are about 8 inches tall.
I could see the remnants of the seed’s shell that the two trees were coming from when I detangled and separated them, so I’m sure they were from just the one seed.

I notice first flowering in my lucuma seedlings this year (now). I brought the seeds from Pisac market (Peru) during my 2011 trip. Fruits were big and very sweet - dry variety Lucuma.

Mine, that is flowering is a Lúcuma de seda/moist type. The small seedings are a mystery to me, were just labeled as “lucuma”.

Dont know the variety of mine seedlings because in Pisac market people doesnt recognize that. But the fruits were realy big, far more than P.caimito fruits which I taste this spring in Borneo.

It’s been a month since I first noticed it flowering. It sure does take it’s time for the flowers to mature enough to open...

...also, new flowers are forming above the initial flowers...
