Tropical Fruit Discussion / Die Die fungus Mango Regimen
« on: January 21, 2018, 06:34:48 PM »

Hey Forum,

Seen a few posts on here about spraying mangos and trying to make heads or tales out of it, so posting this as to maybe elicit feedback from the pros and help the new to sprayers like myself. This is my first time ever spraying for fungus in my yard and with 7 small-ish mangos I’m using a cheep 1 gal sprayer from Home Depot. Bought Bonide liquid copper 16oz and Sulfur powder 1lb from amazon, placed 1/4 cup of sulfur (powder first) then 1/4 cup liquid copper into sprayer then filled with warm tap water. Went to town on my trees right before the sun went down. I read somewhere that best time to spray is before sun goes down as possibly too much early sun would be rough on the trees. Plan to do this around every 1.5 weeks, my Maha just started flowering and others are starting to push... flowers I hope!

Seriously weird year so far, not a single one of my mangos: coco cream, lemon zest, seedling ivory, ice cream, Maha chanok, NDM, sweet tart have bloomed yet but my sweet heart lychee has, nuts right?!?

Hey can either of you guys post pics of the leaves of your suspected Emperor Lychees (mature and newly flushed)? Would appreciate it. I recently planted out a 4ft seedling lychee that was growing in a pot at my mothers. I suspect it is an emperor because the original fruit was very large with a large seed, fruit was given to us by a Cambodian friend living in Bradenton FL. The leaves look slightly different that my sweetheart lychee.

Usually my maha chanok is in flower on thanksgiving... not this year. Leaves are still on the tree just shredded up from the winds of Irma. Tips look like they are starting to swell and will propbably flush very soon. Lots of rain it seems.

Hey Forum,

Anyone in FL actually growing and fruiting this? See there are a few places to purchase this but have never seen any growers talking about or pics of locally grown fruit. I’m almost considering growing just as the leaves are super unique and pretty to me as another tree in my yard.

Yes I did, purchased from spicy exotics... one measly cutting, which I rooted and it produced a few shoots which I then cut off further and rooted more. Now I have about 5 1ft long rooted cuttings going to be a while till any fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How to open a mango seed. . . .
« on: October 26, 2017, 11:52:19 PM »
I have had too many close calls to realize that fresh slippery seeds do not jive with sharp objects... and the biggest risk to injury was my own patience. After eating the mango take steel wool or a brillo pad (which ever is closest to kitchen sink at the time) and scrub the slippery flesh residue off the husk. This gives a nice clean seed husk, then place on a small plate on countertop and let sit for 3-4 days. The husk dries out (the embryo inside is fine) and gets somewhat crispy, at that point trip the thinnest edges of seed husk with kitchen shears and easily open with fingers. To germinate wrap embryo in paper towel, wet with water and place in semi-sealed ziplock bag for 2-3 weeks, should see a distinct root by then and can transplant to a small pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Edward mango: mono or poly embryonic seed?
« on: September 13, 2017, 11:45:00 PM »
I haven't had an Edward in a very longtime, but in this link from university of Florida there is a table that says that Edward is a mono embryonic seed. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mg216

This tree is only about 4 feet tall, the split is an inch or two above the graft.

That tree looks really rough, sorry. Probably better off buying a new one, or maybe make a clean cut right below the break but above the graft line and remove the top portion maybe it will send out a new shoot.

Kineticurchin- can you take a pic of the whole tree? ...to see where the break is in regards to rest of tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tree specific hardiness, post hurricane Irma.
« on: September 11, 2017, 09:49:16 AM »
Hey Forum,

Hope everyone affected is ok with minimal damage. Wanted to start this thread and so we can compile enough reports to get an overall idea of how well certain tropical fruit trees hold up against hurricanes. Please be specific on what measures you took to protect your trees and post pictures with how they fared. After surveying my yard it seems certain trees were harmed more due to their location on my lawn but also based on the type type of tree.

Pervuvian apple cactus: pushed over and will need to be straightened and staked, also in same pic oro negro 🥑 just chilling and not affected, maybe partially due to near house privacy wall and also zip tied to an electrical conduit pipe hammered into ground about 3 ft for support. Lisa atemoya: battered badly, was zip tied to electrical conduit stake and zip tie broke. Seedling ivory mango: no precautions were taken too the storm like a champ, leggy branches are bent but not broken. Naha chanok: no precautions and tree is bent over and will need to be stakeked.  Seedling sugar Apple: beaten to a pulp, no precautions were taken, hope this guy survives.  Coco cream: gave it a heavy pruning, some branches are broken but overall it fared way better this year vs Irma than it did last year vs Matthew. Cereus bar monstrose: limb was broken off, also not pictured multiple limbs of various dragon fruits blown off. Sweet heart lychee: this tree was most exposed and took the storm like an absolute champ, no precautions were taken. Not pictured are my citrus (tangelo, grapefruit, lemon) all handled the storm well.

In summary for me at least I would rank lychee, citrus, avocado, mango, cactus, Anona in terms of hurricane resistance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My first avocado harvest - New variety
« on: September 10, 2017, 06:13:04 PM »
This avocado looks delicious, would love to try it someday and definitely put me down on the eventual budwood list. Curious have you ever tried the Reed avocado? I've had a couple and that was my personal favorite.

Congrats again, love to see new varieties being created by members!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coco cream Hurricane Haircut
« on: September 08, 2017, 09:28:42 PM »
Last year during Matthew my coconut cream was badly ripped up, so I cut it down to a ft length on either side of the fork. Something about its long vigorous spindly growth habit that it caught the wind really good vs other mango trees in my yard. After the cut it literally looked like a stick. It has grown back quick this year and going into Irma I decided to level off the higher branches and then thin out the remaining canopy. Maybe it will fare better this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple Pleasure Pics
« on: September 03, 2017, 11:55:37 PM »
Hey Forum,

Was wondering if someone with a pineapple pleasure tree could post a few close up pics of what the leaves look like and also the whole tree to get an idea of the growth habit. I saw a few pics previously on the forum but they seemed blurry and since then maybe more members have trees now. TIA

« on: September 03, 2017, 02:17:24 PM »
Water all the time (rainy season) and well sprinkler system,  citrus/avocado fertilizer every other month, wood chips around base of the two problem trees (maybe that's it?) the worse of tangelo I don't pull weeds around the tree because it has a black screen underneath the wood chips.

Sounds brutal, just an idea but would it make sense to have drought tolerant shade trees on one side of fruit trees to protect your trees during heatwave/drought?

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus noob here, needs help
« on: September 03, 2017, 07:44:21 AM »

Having citrus problems, 1st pic is star ruby grapefruit, basically not thriving and seems to have some branch due back. 2nd is Meyer lemon just loving life with fruit on it, I don't get it really not doing anything different that I can think of. Last is tangelo, not thriving at all big die back.

Any help or tips much appreciated,

Last night my wife and I started watching Ozark on Netflix and just couldn't stop, next thing we knew it's was 2:30am and like wtf it's way past time for bed. Go to walk the dog and noticed my DF were flowering so of course my wife n I are out almost 3 am taking nighttime photos and trying to hand pollinate.

...my neighbors think I'm nuts.

Just an idea, but would be interesting to breed this with a Lisa or Noel's big red... maybe get some really interesting red offspring.
