Anyone have any decent Italian lemon varieties they would like to trade budsticks?
-
I'd love to, as I am sure most of us in the quarantine zone would.
But, well, you understand.
-
Thanks Millet the St Teresa budwood arrived in great shape!
-
Oolie what do you have? I might be interested in buying a few budsticks from you.
-
Monachello lemons no longer available in the US either?
-
Here's a list of lemons I'm looking for, any help would be great.
Monachello lemon
Corpaci lemon
Femminello Ovale
Femminello Sfusato
Genoa lemon
Limonero Fino 49
Lunario lemon
Villafranca lemon
Sad part is I had most of these years ago...
-

I've been in contact with ivica & am trying to get him posting here. He's a great wealth of lemon knowledge...

Laaz, I thought I was satisfied with my citrus collection until I saw your post. Now I want those varieties also!

No kidding! What a way to scramble a CCPP order in the last minute!
-
Lmao! Problem is UCR won't release most of them.

As far as I can tell, that Sfusato Amalfitano is not the "limone pane" that is referenced in the cedro salad post... That huge limone pane seems to be Limone di Procida. The Sfusato Amalfitano is what replaced it commercially, I believe, and it's a "femminello", which I assume means smaller in a male chauvinistic world (unless it refers to a smoother skin)... The search continues...
https://vivaifrappetta.it/prodotto/limone-di-procida/ (https://vivaifrappetta.it/prodotto/limone-di-procida/)
Edit:
I think this shows how confusing the naming is. Here's Amalfi Bread Lemon: https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/amalfi-bread-lemon/ (https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/amalfi-bread-lemon/) and here's Amalfi Lemon (a much more std lemon): https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/amalfi-lemon/. (https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/amalfi-lemon/.) Plus for good measure a Femminello Amalfi Lemon (seedless): https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/adamo-femminello-lemon-seedless-vcr-103/. (https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/adamo-femminello-lemon-seedless-vcr-103/.) I still can't tell from that description whether the Amalfi Bread Lemon is really the huge fruit... The description of the Roman Citron https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/roman-citron/ (https://www.oscartintori.it/en/prodotto/roman-citron/) seems much closer to what the recipes mention.
Ok, next search is for "howto smuggle lemons into CA" :o

Italy has many different varieties it's not funny.

Haha, I edited my post at the same time as you posted 8) Addictive search! But yeah, "it's a mess"...
Edit: looks like the Corsican Citron is the closest match in the UCR Citrus Variety Collection...
-
Laaz, I'm curious, what are you going to do with so many lemon trees? You will have so many more fruits then you could possibly ever use, or perhaps could ever give away.,
-
I use lemons on pretty much everything. And here fresh seafood is pretty much the norm as well.
-
During the winter- early spring one can buy here these big bumpy lemons from Amalfi region, exceptionally good, moderately soar with sweet albedo.

Ilya, I'm waiting for you to send me some seeds... ;D
-
Do you the name of that particular lemon cultivar from the Amalfi coast?
No, on the price tag it was marked just Italian organic lemons. As you see on the box it is written that they were packed in the town of Battipaglia not far from Amalfi coast.
Look like Sfusato Amalfitano lemons.

Ilya, I'm waiting for you to send me some seeds... ;D
Yes Sir ;D,
Just need your address by PM.

Thanks G (eyeckr) for the budwood.

The problem with the whole matter is that limone pane is somewhat a folk's name, that means, it doesn't really ties strongly to a variety (or to be more precise, to a single clone) like for istance "cara cara orange". It's more akin to the word "plantain" where you use a word to specify the use of the fruits more than the specie of the plant, and this works pretty well in a farmer's society because things get their value by their immediate use...
(On a unrelated note "Femminello" means "little female" and refers to the many child (lemons) this varieties make)
In the cedro salad post, i think the "Limone cedrato gigante" has been used by the author of the post. You can find it in tintori page. "Limone cedrato" is another category of citrus (like grapefruits, for istance) wich is pretty old (centuries), and not so much widespread anymore, but you can find them here in some collections and some people assure me that they are the best for salads. They are "citron flavoured" lemons (this is the meaning of "limone cedrato" if that makes sense) the word "cedrato" refers to citron but remains ambiguous in what such referece is.
Anyway, there are several varieties of such citrons good for salads. Among the best, you have the "Limone cedrato spadafora", the "Limone piretto" and the "Limone ponzino amalfitano". Each of those will be good in salads.
During the winter- early spring one can buy here these big bumpy lemons from Amalfi region, exceptionally good, moderately soar with sweet albedo.
I got similar lemons from a plant my grandfather left me but i didn't get any name for it from him:
They grow nicely but not as good as the onle in souther italy i guess because i lack of heath. The fruit of mine don't look very similar to the lemon i find at the store from amalfi coast, but then again, i don't even know what those are.

Thanks Pancrazio.

Thanks for the clarifications!!!

Pancrazio, its been a while, awesome having you posting of the citrus forum again.

Interesting article about research in Campania Region to get ideal samples of main lemon cultivars.
In the Sorrentine Peninsula, researches collected 20 accessions of "Ovale di Sorrento" (marked OS01 to OS20).
in the Amalfi Coast they collected 14 accessions of "Sfusato Amalfitano" (marked OS01 to OS14).
in the island of Procida 6 accessions of " Limone di Procida ” (codes PR01 - PR06).
Interesting, that all accessions were find infected with viroids of exocortis and cachexia,
and most of them with infectious variegation.
Most significant clones were cleaned from diseases and archived.

That Italian forum has some interesting posts :-). Do you guys have no HLB issues?
-
Luckily not yet, but if you ask me it's just a matter of time. But, as for now, we also lack the asian psyllid, so any infection should remain contained. But the citrus psyllid arrived in spain so eventually will reach also here.
Also awareness in Italy is super-low. :-[

Thanks Ilya, seeds arrived today in great shape!

Lemox is patented, and apparently they don't sell to the public.

That's too bad, looks like a really nice lemon & seedless as well.

Not sure why. What i know is that some guy on the Italian forum attempted to get this one and got declined. Either they had a minimum order unapproachable (like, say, 100 plants) or they don' seel directly to private custumers. If you are interested i may ask.

I remember Petr Broza had one as well.

Some cultivars like Orri ® (it has insane license terms), or Tango ® are for sale only in big quantities and only for Italy in Italian nurseries, but no problem with Lemox ®, you can buy big tree for 10€ in Italy.

I use lemons on pretty much everything. And here fresh seafood is pretty much the norm as well.
My motto is there is hardly any food that can't be improved by the addition of lemon juice (or hot sauce!).
-
Exactly & I use quite a bit of hot sauce as well. My favorite all around sauce is "Tears of the sun". For the hotter stuff we have a local company that makes "Sweeter Reaper" I grow reapers & really like the sauce.

😍😍 and now I’m no longer thinking I have it all lol!

Just want to thank everyone who has helped out. I've been planting & grafting quite a bit. :D

Very good, they all came from the fruit on the last photo.
-
Are Italian lemons more cold hardy than your standard eureka or Lisbon varietals?
-
Many parts of Italy where they are growning are listed as 8b... Pancrazio could probably give you better information on this & how they are protected.
-
Widespread outside cultivation happens just in zone 9b, you can find folks that grows them outside in zone 9a in good/sheltered spots, but the plants are going to die eventually. Regarding the zone 8, there are basically no plants outside in winter, people grow them in pot and bring them inside. To be fair, most of the historical collection in central italy were grown in pot just because of that, rich people moved lemon in building made exactly for this reason called limonaie, and there they were kept and they could be also heated when needed.
There is an interesting exception to that. Well, the lemons weren't exceptionally cold hardy, but the place is microclimatically interesting: and those are the glacial lakes in nothern Italy, where in a couple of place they grew lemons due the warmer enviroment due the presence of the lake.
I wonder what kind of madman saw a glacial lake and said "i'm going to grow lemons here" but it did work!
I have been there last autumn. Keep in mind that place is 40 miles from Switzerland. This is the landscape:
(https://i.postimg.cc/Mn2bcR15/20181103-134901.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mn2bcR15)
(https://i.postimg.cc/RNnLVGJq/20181103-134950.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RNnLVGJq)
Amazing micro/nanoclimate in my opinion.
There's also a place there called "Limone sul garda" ( https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limone_sul_Garda )which sounds pretty much like "Lemon over the Garda lake" wich coincidentally has a widespread lemon cultivation. Such structure you see in the pics were used to put some trellis on lemons in order to defend them by light frosts in windless nights. If i were to search for an hardy lemon that is a good place to start, i guess, even if i don't know how much of the original clones may be still alive there. AFAIK no especially hardy lemon is widely grown in italy.
USDA zones are not so good for evaluating italian climate because i'm under the impression that our winter days are darker and cooler compared to same USDA zone of the east coast, and our spring/autumn are longer and also on average cooler (in same usda zones i mean).

I've got a couple of sticks grafted of Pomona seedless lemon, top working trees. Anyone tried that one? I assume it's Italian with name like that.

I had one & got rot rid of it. Pomona is acidless & not very good.

Yeah, I heard it's sweet due to the lack of acid. It's a graft so if I don't like it I'll just cut off the branch. Was a gift from a friend in Beaumont who paid big bucks for certified disease free citrus wood from TX A&M.

Interesting. How does it taste?
-
((Вкус кислый, сочный лимонный, но кожура больше клементиновая. Вес 70 гр., в чае получается приятный необычный вкус))
The taste is sour, juicy lemon, but the peel is more Clementine. Weight 70 gr., the tea turns out to be a pleasant unusual taste

Very interesting.

Why would anyone even want a clementine X lemon? The lemon ruins the clementine portion, and the clementine ruins the lemon portion.
-
Beautiful area, amazing story.
I've got a couple of sticks grafted of Pomona seedless lemon, top working trees. Anyone tried that one? I assume it's Italian with name like that.
AFAIK Pomona limetta took its name from Pomona, California. The clone is very similar (possibly the same thing) as Bergamot of tunisi or limetta romana dolce. I grew all those three but at the end i got rid of most of them. The only difference i saw, if i remember well, is the flower's colour. All of those fruits are acidless. The peel aroma is very nice, much bergamot-like. But the pulp is really insipid.
-
Still my favorite...

New ones emerge every other day.

Laaz, are those seedling from the same seed, or was multiple seeds planted? What is the cultivar?
-
Millet, they are from the seeds Ilya sent me from the fruit he bought in a photo from earlier in this post.

That's not support, that's to keep the tree rats & birds from ripping them up.

Here is a new lemon for Laaz's collection.
The Wonderful Company BB #:115157, known for its dedication to harvesting health and happiness around the world through its iconic consumer brands today announced the introduction of a new produce brand, Wonderful Seedless Lemons, a naturally seedless, Non-GMO Project Verified variety of lemon that will debut this fall 2019.
The Wonderful Company owns the exclusive rights to this new, premium quality seedless lemon variety available in North America.
-
If the trees ever become available... But no, I'm not willing to "pay a premium price" for a seedless lemon. Joe Real just sent me budwood for a seedless lemon.

Uf....That announcement sounds like some kind of sect. Clear example of company, where half of the price is "story and brand".
Something like bottle of city water for 100$, because it is unique, carefully packed, our staff do it with love, America’s No. 1 and 100% organic.
-
Indeed. It's all about the $$$...
-
Of course it all about money. What else, isn't most everything? However, I for one would prefer a seedless lemon.
-
There are a few out there already. Doesn't really matter to me, I don't eat lemons out of hand.
-
😁 ebay has everything🤣

Looks like in Italy, they distinguish different kinds of lemons from the same cultivar.
Femminello comune is a greatly reflowering cultivar with high setting aptitude; it has five annual blossomings to which five different names of fructifications correspond.
The most important blossoming, from a qualitative point of view, is the first, which produces fruit that ripen from October to March. They are the so-called ‘’winter lemons’, with a more or less rough epicarp, a high sourness and a variable number of pips. The earliest fruit of this first blossoming, which ripen between September and October, are called Primofiore; they are highly valued on the market. Then, there are the so-called ‘‘maiolini’, ‘’biancucci’ or ‘’bianchetti’, which are light yellow, with a slightly rough epicarp, few pips and a lower level of sourness. Very often they bear fruit in bunches; the ripening is between April and May. The famous ‘verdelli’, ripen in the summer of the following year, are rather cheap. The verdelli, that usually grow in bunches, have a smoother epicarp, a low sourness and almost no pips (technically, they say that the pips are aborted). Then, there are the so-called ‘‘bastards’, which ripen in after more or less a year and have a smooth epicarp and a deep yellow colour. Lastly, we have to remember the ‘‘marzani’, usually picked together with the winter lemons. They are never numerous, more or less of a round shape, and they have a rough epicarp, a long and flat umbo, a certain number of pips and a high sourness.

The Femminello Apireno is also seedless.

I hear ya, only one branch. At least the zest is great for baking. Was free wood from the Texas Aggie certified disease center.
I've got about 6 varieties of oranges and all kinds of limes and stuff grafted to mainly a key lime tree. In spite of the low of 22F due to running out of fuel with about 8 hours to go the fruit and new growth are/were over the top. Blood oranges are excellent.

I really hit the trees hard with about a pound of 15-9-12 osmocote each tree. Foliage never looked so healthy.
