I agree with Oolie. It's Butterfly weed. If you wait awhile, it will flower. Either Orange or Yellow flowers.

Palmcity - Do you sell any of your mangoes? I am interested in the Orange essence, Sweet tart, LZ and Cac. I have these varieties planted but they are young and not fruiting yet.

Fruitnoob - $8/Lb for Orange Sherbet!!!  I just sold a box of 10 for $55 and that included priority shipping. You are in FL, I would have just given you a few to try if you were anywhere near my location. I've lost about 30 OS to squirrels. 5 of my largest ones just yesterday. They aren't even ripe. They take a bite or two and then leave them there to taunt me, drives me nuts!

Thank-you to everyone that has contacted me and sent payment. I appreciate it.

I am all sold out.

Thank-you for your kind words.

If anyone else is interested, I can do one or maybe two more medium priority mail boxes.
I have Maha chanok, Mallika and Orange sherbet available. $55/box.

I got a bumper crop of mangoes this year even though I lost about half the crop to the extreme drought we were having. The other side effect of the intense heat and lack of rain, all earlier mangoes were sugar bombs. The Pickering and Coconut Cream, in particular, were almost unbearably sweet. I let them all tree ripen because even with eating 4-5 mangoes a day, freezing mangoes and giving them away to friends, family and neighbors, I could not keep up.

Last year, I got only one Carrie and a squirrel beat me to it. This year I got about 60 and they were excellent.
I got some freakishly large Edward and Mallika mangoes. A few of the Edwards were close to 2 lbs each. I had no idea they could get that large!

Now that we have had some rain for the past three weeks the intense sweetness in the Coconut cream mangoes has eased up and I can taste coconut and a bit of pineapple flavor and not just sugar. Have 3 of them left and I am savoring them!

The first Orange Sherbet to ripen had jelly seed but the rest have been fine. I know a lot of people think LZ is superior but my first experince with LZ was so horrible, even when I eat a good one now, I have that unpleasant memory that keeps me from truly appreciating it.

Hi,

If you are still looking for mangoes, I have Maha chanok, Mallika and Orange sherbet available.

Your suggestion is a great one but unfortunately not feasible for me for a multitude of reasons.
For one, I live within city limits, off of a fairly busy road, so any work that is done in my front yard gets scrutinized. Digging a 3 foot deep trench along my property line is going to bring the city code enforcement to my door in a heartbeat. Second, even if I were allowed to dig a trench (never going to happen, I have had enough "interactions" with the city to guarantee that), I have 150 ft of fence line in my front yard, that much digging will be the end of me. I am not that strong of a woman :-)!

Anyone else have suggestions on trees?

Looking for suggestions on mango trees that are vigorous growers but that can still be kept to a reasonable size.

I planted some citrus trees along my fence line 3 years ago, with another row further away. All were planted on mounds about 8-12 inches above the soil line. The row that is further away has done fine but the ones about 7 feet away from the fence line have really struggled and barely grown. I wasn't sure what was going on with them, so I decided to dig one up. Apparently, the cedar trees on my neighbor's property have sent out roots into my property, under the soil and up into each mound for the trees that are close to the fence line! The mounds are so full of cedar roots, it is no wonder my citrus trees did not grow. I have been hacking away at the cedar roots and trying to follow them all the way back to the fence line and chopping them off there but it is a total pain in the @ss.

I don't want to waste all that space with no trees. So, I thought planting some vigorous mango trees might work. My thought is, after the tree are bigger, I won't have to water and fertilize them like the citrus, so hopefully the cedar trees will decide to not send so many roots my way. I could be way off here!

I already have the following mango varieties, Pickering. Maha Chanok, Orange Sherbet, Mallika, Kesar, Edward, Guava, Valencia Pride, Carrie (2), Coconut Cream (2), Cac (2).

The Cac's are still in pots and I am considering planting one of them along the fence line.

Suggestions and advice are welcome. If you can think of any other kind of fruit trees that might work in those spots please let me know. Only requirement is that they are not too scraggly or messy looking. These trees are going in my front yard, so I would like to try to keep things looking a little neat.

Thanks!

Julie, Veggie Professor - would you mind sharing where you get your coconut trees from? Also, the names of the different varieties you have?
Thanks!

Thanks, Brian. I just modified my post to say Polysorbate 20 instead of 80, which is what I currently have on hand.. Does it matter if it is 20 or 80?

12
Anyone use Polysorbate 20 as a spreader sticker for foliar sprays? If you do, how much do you add per gallon?

Anyone here in contact with Dom (TheDom)? He hasn't posted on here for a while. Not sure how to check to make sure if he and his family are okay.

dwfl and orkine - Thankyou!

Should I cut of the dead blooms or just leave them?

My Carrie mango (2 yrs in the ground from a 3 gal) bloomed end of Dec.

A couple of nights below 40 in the last ten days. Flowers gone, no sign of any fruit. Should I cut off the dried blooms?  Forecast says 33F for upcoming Sat night into Sun morning.

Couple of other mango trees bloomed early Jan with fewer blooms but have tiny fruit on them. Assuming these are toast given the forecast temps?

Any possibility of these trees blooming again or will I have to resign myself to having no mangoes from my trees this year?

I have an 'Oliver' loquat and want to add another variety. Did not like the 'Champagne' or 'Sherry' that I tasted. I have read that 'Novak' and 'Pupello'  loquats are good varieties. Just fruits and Exotics have these varieties for sale, so I thought of asking for some informed opinions before hitting the buy button.

Another good choice is a grafted Berry Seedling (will probably be hard to find).

Rob - Why a grafted Berry? Do the seeds not come true?

Here is TM Red aka Timor aka Tony Morris Red.

I bought a Bangkok Lemon and a Timor Red from Excalibur a few months ago. BL growing well. TM is not doing much. Do you know if it is a slow grower?   (I asked for you when I went to Excalibur, hoping to pick your brain for as much info as possible but they said you no longer worked there)

Have to admit I like Berry and its a tribute to Ron Berry. Just don't have it with Amber.

Why? Is the Berry not as good or is there some other issue?

Acheta - I used a 8-9 month Osmocote during the last week of May. I figured that would take care of the trees through end of September. Do you fertilize annonas in October?  I don't know if I should considering they will soon be going dormant.

Har -  I will add gypsum.
Also, thanks for your help in picking mango trees at Truly Tropical as well as all the advice you gave. The trees are growing well.

I bought this tree a year ago. Honestly, I did not want to. It was a miserable looking tree (it actually looks "better" in this picture than it does in person) but I had gone to someone's house to get it and did not know how to say no.
The picture below is exactly how the tree looked when I got it except it had 2 more leaves on it. It has not put out even one new leaf in one whole year. I gave up on it a couple of months ago and relegated it to the dig out and discard list.

As a comparison, here is a Sri Chompoo now that I bought the same day from a nursery also as a 3 gal and planted at the same time.

I went to dig out the tree yesterday and saw signs of new growth! I can't believe it just sat there for a year and did nothing. Anyway, long story short, I would like to save the tree if it is going to grow but the few leaves that are on there are covered with small white bugs. I know it's not mealy bugs. Anyone know what they are and what I should use to get rid of them?

New growth

Tiny white bugs.
