Care for pruned large limbs
« on: July 22, 2020, 09:18:51 PM »
Careless me.  I posted this  in the for sale forum and couldn't see how to move it here; or delete it.  Help...So sorry...

I just had to cut some rather large limbs from my mango tree.  It was unfortunately planted over 40 years ago under power lines - stupid me.
I've been able to keep it down, but notice I sometimes get a bit of rot on the pruned limb - like there is a 1/2 to 3/4 inch hole.  Looks like rot anyway.

Just wondering, should I put some whitewash on the cuts and will that prevent the rot.  Or use the pruning "tar" stuff?
The cuts are angled so that rain will roll off.
If I do whitewash, will that prevent new shoots?  I want new shoots 'cuz want to do some more grafting on it.

Or just leave the limbs alone - maybe use shade cloth to keep sun off.  Was told that limbs need to avoid direct sun so to not sunburn.

Thanks,

Seanny

I don’t use tar pruning sealer any more.
I’m tired of looking at the black cuts.
I use a couple coats of white glue on cuts, but those are not as large as yours.

My friend’s tall mango tree lost most barks on the South side.
So paint or use shade cloth for your cut.
