Rodney, the Chinese say that anything grown in the same ground as bitter melon will turn out bitter.  Let us know if there's any effect on your tomatoes.

Interested in 4 plants if they are still available.  Was not on the forum when you started this thread.  These sound amazing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When to Pick a Kari Star Fruit

Congratulations...that is amazing.  I've been tempted to try growing starfruit (in a container) but the ones in the grocery store are so bland and tasteless.  Are they really worth growing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Struggling mango
« on: August 11, 2013, 01:43:47 PM »
I was just doing that.  Yup, it's drowning.  I was confused because it was on its second growth flush.  The roots have rotted and the medium is WAY too wet.  I'm now letting what's left of the root ball dry out on my bench for a few hours in the shade.  I'll move it into a dryer mix like what I have my other mangoes in...lots of perlite and some pumice for drainage because it's what I can get here.  I'll probably cut off the last wilting set of leaves because it's too much for the compromised root ball to support.  It needs to rest.  I flipped my other healthy mangoes out of their pots to see what the roots should look like.  They are all fine.  Thanks, doglips.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Struggling mango
« on: August 11, 2013, 11:59:14 AM »
Hi all, I posted recently about tip browning on mango leaves, and now I can't find that thread.  I appreciate all the responses.  I have just been so busy I haven't gotten back to this.  Now I have a new symptom.  Sudden wilt of new growth and stem shriveling on this same tree.  I staked it up thinking I'd forgotten to water, but watering didn't help so I'm wondering if this is a sign of drowning.  My other mangoes (seedlings) have never done this.  In the meantime, the old leaves continue to brown, and the leaf stems are shriveling.  TIA!  Also any tips on what size to use when posting a photo?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango leaf tips browning--is it the water?

My mango is growing well but a few leaf tips are browning.  Do I need to lower the pH or is it a sign of drought stress? or ???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How fast do mallika mangoes grow?
« on: July 16, 2013, 12:09:13 AM »
I got a Mallika 3 gal. from PIN in June.  It went through shock, dropped most of its leaves after they browned at the edges.  Then I went on vacation and it because it sometimes hits over 100 degrees here, I plunked it in the shade and told my plant sitter not to overwater it.  Turns out she watered daily, and it pushed new growth while I was gone.  It seems I've been underwatering it.  If I really let the soil dry out even somewhat (still damp to the touch, but lighter), the new growth just pushing out shrivels up and dies.  Must be the low humidity here or something.  I think I need to water a lot.

I have to leave the room when a durian gets opened.

Oscar, I have no idea if she is the one.  Wouldn't surprise me, though!

Oscar, here's the best concise telling of the story I could find:
http://www1.chinaculture.org/library/2008-02/08/content_22669.htm

ohiojay, I took your suggestion and contacted PIN.  We're working on it.  My mom will send photos so I can see if there is live wood above the graft.  I explained to PIN that my mom has an incredibly green thumb. She fruits pineapples in her dining room and greenhouse in the (cooler) SF Bay Area.  She has grown orchids for 40-plus years.  Now she's harvesting huge heirloom tomatoes from her greenhouse.

Nullzero--I thought $3.99/lb for really good lychees was reasonable after paying $25/lb to have them shipped to my home!

We just returned from Orlando (took our 13 yr old son to do the theme parks) and I convinced my guys to take a detour to buy fruit at Saigon Market.  (Orlando traffic is horrible!)  Thanks to you folks for the tip on this store!  This was June 11th, and we were able to buy lychees.  They had 3 types--we bought the ones the lady said were Mauritius, for $3.99/lb.  They certainly matched the description.  They were fabulous.  I managed to gain weight on vacation despite walking all day long in that heat and humidity and I honestly think it's because I stuffed myself with lychees every night.  The clerk didn't know the names of the other two varieties they had.  One was smaller, with softer flesh, priced at $2.99/lb. and while good, it wasn't as good as the Mauritius.  The other was too pricey at $6.99./lb, and she said they had small seeds.  I didn't sample that variety.  We carried the leftovers home on the plane, no problem.  We ate the last of them last night.  These were far superior to the Sweethearts I ordered from Lycheesonline.  I concluded that the Sweethearts were picked too early for shipment.  Very acidic, and not terribly sweet.  Now I have my son hooked on lychees (hubby not so much) so I feel I've passed down my Chinese heritage.  I told him the story of Lady Yang Guifei to really complete the experience.  I'm considering buying an Emperor tree to grow in a pot (Z6).

I also bought a pack of 4 mangoes, of which 2 were Mexican Ataulfo type and two were green and apparently local (no label), probably NDM.  The lady said "we call them Doc Mai", and they match all the photos I've seen.  No fiber.  They were just starting to sweeten up, and past the hard stage.  Naturally, I saved the seeds to start at home.

Quick question on mango trees--I ordered two Mallika mango trees from PIN and had one sent to my Mom in California.  I'm in Washington State.  Both our trees suffered from leaves turning brown starting at the edges.  Then we both had a lot of leaf drop.  Mine has recovered (started growing while I was in Florida!) but my Mom's has apparently croaked.  She'll hang on to it for a while just in case it decided to do something.  Pretty expensive dead tree, with shipping to CA.  What does the browning from the edges indicate?  I really want to pug my tree but I will definitely let it settle in and grow for a while before doing anything that drastic.

TIA

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango seedling advice needed
« on: October 30, 2012, 03:23:30 AM »
So, my first mango seedling just popped its head up today, and it sort of reminds me of a Truffula Tree from the Lorax.  :)  I just stuck the seed in a quart size yogurt container which is ridiculously small, but I do want to keep it potted, so I know I'll need to keep it somewhat pot-bound.  Now that the root (probably the taproot, I'm guessing) has found a drainage hole and wants to escape, I'm wondering how I manage this thing.  Do I encourage the root to circle the bottom of the pot by pushing it in, just let it get air pruned after escaping the bottom of the pot, or ??  I'm guessing this is an ongoing problem even when I pot up.  When will this thing be tough enough to handle transplanting? TIA

A few evenings ago in my late night research on mono/polyembryonic research, I found lots of conflicting info on which sprouts are the nucellar ones in poly seeds.  I finally found one article, which I should have bookmarked, that indicated that the variety of mango determined whether the strong one/s were the clones and the weak ones the sexually produced zygotes, or vice-versa.  This seemed the only logical explanation for all the conflicting information.  It was definitely not an article of US origin, and was academic in nature, but it was probably 1:00 am at the time so that's all I remember.

Hi, I'd be glad to pay postage for the dwarf everbearing mulberry.  It's been on my wish list for quite some time now.  Partially bare rooted is great.  I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure how this works but I guess you can message me...Thanks!
