Hi,

My experience is that M. vexator is clearly more adaptable to alkaline soil/water conditions.
My M. vexator is now over 4 meters tall and does rather well whereas all other Myrciaria species
struggle...

Is Myrciaria vexator compatible with any Plinia/Myrciaria species?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Genipa americana.
« on: September 11, 2016, 03:54:04 PM »

 Hi,

I have a Genipa americana that is blooming for the first time.

It has never thrived in my climate and often takes a hit when there's a cold wave with
near freezing temperatures. Still, it manages to recover and has gained some size over the years,
although it is rather spindly. Today, I noticed it has some yellow flowers in a couple of
 branches.

Does anyone know if it needs a companion to set fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need Id: Garcinia
« on: September 11, 2015, 08:49:44 AM »

 Hi,

I would like to identify the Rheedia/Garcinia in the pictures below...

I have a pair of them and the largest one seems to have set its first fruits.

They are probably 10 years old or more and are slow growers,
probably from being crowded and shaded by 3 larger achachairus ,
which despite being much larger have yet to bloom (grrrr).

Anyways, I had thought/hoped these plants were Luc's mexican garcinia, but the leaves look too round
compared to those that people have posted in the forum of Luc's limoncillo. So, it must something else,
probably Garcinia xanthochymus, Garcinia tinctoria, which I did grow from seed.

Opinions?

Overall look of the plant. Achachairu's in the background.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / C. canito blooms
« on: August 13, 2012, 07:13:55 PM »

 Hi,

Had this nice surprise the other day, when I noticed the first flowers on my C. canito.

Can I aspire to have my first fruits, too? Or, does it share its cousins reluctance in setting fruit for the
 first few years?

Luc, I believe I got the seeds from you!!! Thanks again...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Quiz: Can you guess my name 2?
« on: July 28, 2012, 07:27:47 PM »

I took the picture below a couple of days ago.

Can you guess the name of this fruit? It is edible.

No hints at this time. The family resemblance is quite obvious...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Monstera deliciosa
« on: July 08, 2012, 05:52:45 AM »

Hi,

My Monstera deliciosa fruits have been sitting in the plant for a year or more.
They seem to have stopped growing quite long ago, but show no signs of
ripening. They are still hard as rocks.

Am I supposed to pick them green?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Marula / Sclerocarya Birrea fruiting...
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:33:09 AM »
My second marula (Sclerocarya birrea), planted outside, bloomed for the first time this spring.
It was a pleasant surprise, because (1) the tree turned out to be female and
 (2) the blooms overlapped the male blooms of my second tree.

Three weeks later, the female flowers look this...

No fruit set problems with this species, apparently...
