Who has the following mail order?
« on: September 27, 2012, 05:48:15 PM »
Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows who sells the following plants:
- Abiu (pouteria caimito)
- Ross sapote (pouteria sp.)
- Purple malay apple (syzygium malaccense)
- Sapote de Mico (pouteria torta subsp gallifructa)
Will these fruit in a container? In your opinion are they worth growing? If I can't find plants anywhere, are they hard to germinate from seeds? Any infor. is appreciated, thanks~ Nikki

hi Nikki,

abiu was hard to germinate in my experience.

Ross sapote easier.

not sure about Malay (I don't have that one)

sapote do Mico seeds from Oscar germinated easily 5/8seeds.

I might have a seedling a few seedlings to spare.

let me check my files...I have seedlings of all the species you've requested, besides the Malay...and might be able to sell or trade.

So, right about now, I'm thinking the title Hero Member is very appropriate for you. I'm crossing my fingers, hopefully you have a spare ross/mico/abiu in your plant files. I would be willing to pay of course~ Thanks once again Adam :)

Hi Future,

You wrote "100% failure rate for me so far with abiu." I was a little surprised to hear that. Do you mean your observed germination rate of abiu seeds? I have had 100% success on my abiu seeds (about 10 abiu seeds from different sources). Not sure how I managed that if it's supposed to be hard to to germinate them.

your consistent usage of Rain water might make the difference Tomas.  I wonder if the members who've had trouble germinating them have used city water with high ph like me?

I am 6 for 6 with abiu.  I used rainwater and I potted in 6" pots with coconut coir based potting soil. I sowed the seed about an inch under the surface.   It probably didn't hurt that FGM was the supplier.  They went from the mailbox into the pot.

Abius are super easy to germinate. In fact they do it all by themselves right under my tree.

I agree they are super easy to sprout. I ordered seeds from Oscar years ago when I was in Texas and actually sprouted them through the winter in my garage with a heat lamp

Yep, all pouteria I've come in contact with are super easy to germinate. I've only lost 3 - 2 ever. I lost 2 of the 6 or so Abiu Mike sent up at the start of winter, which were all grown without any protection and were pretty well ignored and one mamey, which was planted super deep for giggles, and ended up rotting.

Malay Apple is also super easy to grow from seed, though I believe there are grafted varieties you can get from Florida? You can grow about 10 plants from 1 seed.

I too have had perfect germination with abiu, 3/3, and that is with using Palm Beach County Water Utilities Water.  I have another batch going no, let's see how that goes.

Adam,

When you run out of rain water, try to collect the city water in barrels and let it sit for 24 hours. That way both flouride and chlorine will dissipate. Unless your city uses chloramines - then it will not evaporate. If so, make the water slightly acid like adding a sliced up lemon. I understand it may not be a feasible method if you water with a hose.

Ok thanks for the insight Bs bullie...maybe it wasn't the city water...or maybe yours municipality has better water?

Adam, your intuition was probably correct. They don't like chlorinated water. A lot of tropical seeds are sensitive to chlorine.

And I was 9/10 on Oscar's Champedak seeds so maybe my water is not that bad (though maybe that was also due to the fact as with a jackfruit seed, they would probably germinate in the Mohave  ;) ;D ).

Adam - do you abiu seeds do "anything" to show any signs of wanting to germinate?  Also, do you do anything to them first ro just clean them and into the medium (with "soft" side up?)?

I had one seed and the plant is now about 7-8" tall. I first soaked the seed in water till it was starting to sprout. I used the tap water. I am in Ft. Lauderdale.

I didn't do anything special...I just planted one seed of a marissa fruit...and it didn't germinate (maybe I've heard marissa seeds are difficult to germinate in particular? maybe not?)

One seed is not exactly a fair sample size to draw conclusions from. Anyway all the abiu cultivars sprout very easily. The only thing that will kill an abiu seed is if you let it dry out or freeze it.
