Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Really Skinny Longan Tree
« on: October 29, 2016, 07:40:04 PM »
You could air layer the top off of that. I have never ever seen a longan grow like that. Is it a seedling? If it is a named cultivar longan you may be better off getting the new air layer going and planting it because that thing's roots are going to be swirling around into a death spiral.

I changed the subject heading to red chempadek as i'm sure that's what they would get called by unscrupulous (and colorblind) nurseryman. HAHA Also thought more of you would read this if you see the word "red" chempadek is in the subject heading.

Worked on me. :)

I would bust up as much of the soil as you can and plant on a very large enriched mound. After that I would mulch the bejeezus out of it with free tree pruner mulch. When you plant make sure you open up and prune out and circling roots. I am a huge fan of charged biochar and endomycorrhizal inoculants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question on Barbados Cherry Seeds
« on: October 26, 2016, 11:23:31 AM »
I was wondering about the seed viability. They all looked aborted and out of the hundreds, if not thousands of seeds that have dropped or been spit in my yard, I have never seen a tree sprout up. Has anyone gotten viable seeds from cross pollination? I prefer to graft onto seedlings rather than cuttings or airlayers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Atemoya trellis in Australia
« on: October 24, 2016, 10:26:56 AM »
I took these this morning. It is a little unruly but I'm growing out the budwood from the different grafts. The main skeleton is Gefner.

@Guanabanus That sounds like a good setup you have there. I don't treat for termites besides beneficial nematodes at the moment. Once I rip everything out and fix the drainage and muck swamp bed my house is built on, there will be plenty of heavily mulched extra large mounds with trees growing out the them.

This is the Hasya.

I totally agree! I am paranoid about mulching too close to the house foundation. I had a decent mat perennial peanut growing but I have let the weeds get away from me since I was gone for a good chunk of the summer and I am going to rip everything out. I am normally a HUGE fan of mulch.

I have what started off as a Gefner on a trellis (espalier). I think I am up to 9 grafts on it now since I was using it to park budwood until my rootstocks catch up. I'll take a picture soon and post it here. My espaliered Hasya sapodilla just set it's first fruit and hopefully my black sapote will hold some fruit this time around as well.

This is the black sapote and you can see the Hasya behind it.

I am in the process of ripping everything up and redoing my entire yard and I am going to put in some tatura trellises to experiment with which are also very popular in Australia.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Water Testing Labs
« on: October 23, 2016, 08:13:15 PM »
I need to get my well water tested. I would like a thorough test for contaminants as well as pH and solids and all that. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for labs? Thanks in advance.

I had Viente Cohol that would fruit really fast. I'm not sure how idiot proof they are since they were growing in an enriched, well mulched and well maintained banana circle with a compost pit in the the middle. They are supposed to be one of the fastest fruiting. It wasn't my favorite tasting banana so I pulled it.

I had some Saba bananas 3 weeks ago and was very impressed. Possibly the best I have had.

Can you grow Mangosteens in Florida 9B??

Hello guys, I am going to order a mangosteen plant from Hulabrothers for $95.95 with shipping. They have it at $150 for two with shipping. My question is, anyone wants to do it and save? It will be 75 each. They say the tree is > 36 inches on their website. Anyone near Punta Gorda or Port Charlotte?

Yes. You can grow Mangosteens in Antarctica.

"Azadi" cultivar won two taste tests at a couple of fruit club meetings. The arils are almost white, sweet, and very soft seed. I don't like the Vietnamese enough to grow it. These are kind of a pain to grow here. My friend has a test plot with about 10 different types. I'll report back when he actually gets fruit.

I bought some of these and I am waiting to see if the seeds sprout. I believe they grow the "Cumbe" cultivar down there for import. I am not sure how these are treated before they get here. One of the produce places around me last year had some from California and I ended up getting some nice viable seeds and ok fruit. Even at $9.99 a pound I find them to be worth it just because I can use the rootstock. I have only had one out of three ripen to be decently edible. One of them didn't even have fully developed seeds.  >:(

I think some dieback is normal at least here in Florida. I have a few small branches that died and the rest of the tree is pushing really healthy growth and larger leaves.

Only use the pond apple as rootstock for elite annonas. It is a famine food but each fruit has plenty of seed. It can live underwater in flooded conditions for over a year according to some research papers I read. I am not sure if it will flourish forever without getting drained but it might. Other people might know better. I haven't been out to the everglades for pond apple hunting.

942
On his website it says that he can't ship Durio seeds to California. I have never looked into that. I can only imagine no seeds/no fruit. I got some monthong from Thailand last time I was out in the East Bay and it was delicious. The seeds were viable as well. I like them ripe and creamy.  ;D

See what annona you can graft onto pond apple. Different pond apples and different cultivars of each species react differently with each other. Once you find out what works you can start using different interstocks to broaden the crops. Make sure you can get the pond apple seeds from the same source or better yet have a mother tree on your own property. I am hoping to get a bunch of experiments started within the next 6 months or so with pond apple and flooding, I just have a lot on my plate right now. I see a lot of benefit from this research and have been brainstorming ideas.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Hawaii rollinia seeds. Cheap!

These fruits are so variable. Any chance these are from the same gene pool as that tree with gigantic flowers I saw on your periscope? That tree looked awesome.

Both the Amber and Berry matured fruit.  1 Berry, and 2 Amber.

Brandon and I found the Berry to be excellent.  To me it was the best I had all year.  Brandon Ranked it near the top as well.  But not everyone felt he same.  Harry, Abayomi, and Sheehan ranked it lower.

The Amber was also a Nice fruit.  I ranked it below Bangkok Lemon and Brandon's mystery Excalibur Red.  Sheehan however ranked the Amber above the Exc red.

Anyway, we can assume that both will improve with tree age.  IMO both are winners, especially considering their precocity and vigor.

I did not keep any seeds.

Nice to hear a report. Thanks!

Hi Sleepdoc. How are these Jackfruit coming along? I would love to buy seeds if you will have them available.

These are the famous $80 Irwin mangos that are growing in snow covered Japan. They have scheduled root pruning they control the fruiting schedule inside the greenhouses. Let me find the pdf on this and I will post it. So so good.

I am also looking for a good place to get shadecloth. Maybe the shiny metal kind. Do you guys like that stuff? It seems like it would last forever.

I thought it would be a really helpful thread. There are plenty of heavy duty tropical fruit enthusiasts here and I'm sure we all have a few special items that work really well or use every day.

I'll start with this badboy. I have a one man edible landscape business and I am a huge proponent of free trimmer mulch. I have moved many many many truckloads and this helps it fly along.

I haven't tried this thing but Jeff (CookieMonster) mentioned it in another thread recently and the reviews are great. I'm sure I'll be ordering one of these soon.

This is my favorite shovel EVER. It wasn't too expensive either.

Their rake is great as well.

I'm a firm believer in buying quality when it is something that will save time and headaches on a regular basis.

I need to find a new source for heavy work gloves for digging and forking mulch so if anyone has a favorite type that would be helpful.

This is off topic but this is so good I might as well throw it in here. Everybody sleeps, especially after long days of digging and mulching. I recently bought a mattress for the first time in 20 years and this thing is absolutely amazing. The girlfriend and the cat LOVE it as well.

Every household, especially with lots of fruit, should own a Vitamix as well. My parents had a Blendtec and the Vitamix is better IMO.

I have no affiliation with any of these companies. I use all of these daily, except for the squirrel trap, some for many many years. Worth every penny in my opinion.
