Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any Info on Cotton Candy Mango?

I have not seen freckled dots on OS but CC has them.

Is the cotton candy mango a winner or loser?  It's been out a while, what's the verdict?

A winner in my yard. Consistent producer of high quality, good-size fruit.  Mid to late season and the growth is not vigorous. I would rate M4 above Cotton Candy in terms of taste but CC has been much more productive for me.

That was so careless of me!

Thanks, John!  Stupid of me to do that :)

Will send you a private message.

Bumping this up as mango season is starting up.  I'd be very grateful if anyone has any Malika.  I would buy or can trade mangos.  I have Venus & Guava mango for trade.

Are you in South Florida?

I've never had a Guava mango, but planted a tree based on the wonderful reputation.  I have my first fruit, and it looks like I should pick it.  Except the stem doesn't look brown.  Can anyone chime in and let me know if this one looks ready?  What do you look for to make sure it's picked at the correct stage?

It looks ready and i am fairly certain you will love the flavor. My tree has about 20 fruits, but still at least a month away from being ripe.

Really, Ugly Betty that bad in production???  Or are you being sarcastic?
It tastes delicious though!  :)

I love the fruit. Just do not get any. The most I have had in a season from the tree are about 5-6.  It flowers heavily every year. Strictly based on flavor, it is among my top five.

I live in Coral Springs. I hear that UB does better in Palm Beach County.

Mallika does that in my yard as well. A great year and then not many the next.

In terms of consistency, nothing beats Ugly Betty. Year after year of consistent poor production  ;D

If you got there late, it was slim pickings but still interesting.
If you got there at 9 am, I am told there was a long line waiting to get in, several hundred people long.
I also learned that they did a lot of buying and by one or two in the afternoon, the floor was relatively sparse.

I got there by about 11.45 a.m. It was already sparse by then, but I got a nice looking green caimito. Nice size and healthy. Saw some nice avocado varieties, including Lamb Hass and Reed. Should have got there earlier.

In my yard, Maha Chanok always takes a year off after a bumper year. This year, there is nothing on the Taralay even though the tree has been a really good producer every year for me.

Mangoes do well with 8-3-9 or 8-2-12 NPK fertilizer once every couple of months. Water well and make sure that you do not over fertilize. Good luck :)

Going strictly by flavor, I will take Sunrise.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Annona Pests
« on: March 10, 2022, 09:18:08 PM »
In the US, Annona reticulata = custard-apple. Annona squamosa = sugar-apple.

In two months, the cuban beetles will be out chomping annona new leaves. The timing coincides with Annona reticulata re-foliation. The beetles can consume all the new leaves just as they emerge from the bud. If that happens more than once, a small to medium sized tree can die.

I think that is what happened to my green caimito as well. Was a healthy little tree, growing really well, and then something started eating its leaves. I should have used some systemic insecticide as the plant was still small, but before I knew, the tree, which was about 3 ft tall, died.

Looks grafted, What variety is it?

In my yard, the Miami variety definitely was not resistant to rot. Lost all my fruits due to it. The fruits would grow a bit, then turn black and drop. I cut the tree down.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Major mango bloom
« on: February 24, 2022, 12:08:52 AM »

Had a good first bloom on the carrie, hima sagar, cotton candy, valcarrie, white pirie, Guava, Angie, Son Pari, Mallika, Sunrise, Venus and Ugly Betty, but hardly any mangoes due to the cold spell and the rain. Seeing second bloom on most trees (or the first in the case of Edgar, Cac, Kesar, Honey Kiss, Lemon Zest and Sweet Tart), but Taralay is dormant.

With how warm it is now, I expect at least some of the swollen buds to push out leaves rather than flowers. Already seeing it on a few trees .

Hi Andre, PM sent.

Lemon Zest and Maha Chanok are not known to be precocious. Once the trees mature more, their productivity (particularly Maha Chanok) should increase. It would also help if you spray sulfur (to protect the blooms from powdery mildew) and copper (against anthracnose).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Concerning hand pollinating soursop

Have you tried bagging the fruits, when they are about the size of a quarter?

I have not. I will do that. The tree has flowers right now.

Thanks, Har.

Fruits on my Miami soursop tree develop to the size of a fist or even bigger and then turn black and fall. This has been happening for the last 3 years at least.  Anyone else dealing with the same problem and know how to fix it?

Old compost bin got knocked over, underneath rollinia tree. The side that it dumped on was the side that became covered in fruit. Have used various ferts in past.

When flowering, hand pollinate and leave some old fruit to rot under the tree. Will attract pollinators over time.

You will need to store pollen in fridge overnight+, separated from plant material (nothing but pollen dust). Sealed, with desiccant pack. Usually don't get male and female flowers on the same nights.

Good luck!

Thank you!

Got a few more fruit ready.

My Rollinia flowers all through the year but is yet to set fruit. What fertilizer do you use?  Is there anything special  that you need to do to make the tree fruit?

Honey Kiss is a much better mango than Pickering, in terms of flavor. Equally productive as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Little Gem doesn't seem so little
« on: July 11, 2021, 11:37:23 AM »

I got this little gem late last summer from truly tropicals. It was a 7 gallon to was about to transfer to a 15 gallon pot. It has not been in the ground for very long and I wasn't going to let it carry fruit but my mother-in-law took a liking to it so I let it carry a few.
Question what happens if you let it ripen on the tree until it is soft to the touch. Will it taste rancid like some of the others

No fruit should really be left on the tree till it gets soft if you can avoid it.  Too many potential negative issues.

i had a few mangoes on my Little Gem tree last year. I accidentally knocked over a mango. That ripened but the fruit was nothing special. I let a couple ripe on the tree. That is when i realized the mango is truly special.   The mangoes were bigger than i expected, but this year, they are considerably smaller as the tree has produced more than a hundred mangoes.
