Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lemon Zest
« on: May 22, 2020, 08:24:20 AM »
Best year yet, no disease, high yield and concentrated flavor! It’s been dry here in central Florida and that has made these mangos extremely tasty!! Only problem is I can only eat so many a day since they are sweet, and they are ripening all at once. Still have several dozen left on the tree.
Just bragging since I have had only one decent year in the 5 years I have had this tree. Figure I won’t be this lucky for many years ahead.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / naphthalene acetic acid on mango trees
« on: January 15, 2020, 06:21:12 PM »
I found some info on this acid significantly decreasing fruit yields by decreasing fruit drop and works on mango trees. I can’t find info on how much, when and how frequently to use during flowering. Does anyone have info on this? I looked on amazon and they sell all different types with different concentrations of vinegar. I am interested in trying this on a lemon zest mango tree to see if it improves yield.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help please. LZ flowering way early
« on: December 22, 2019, 11:07:43 AM »
I live in east coast of central Florida and my lemon zest mango is flowering now. Last year it flowered in late January and the flowers died due to that fungus they are suspital to because it was wet and cold. I heard you can cut back the flowers and they will regrow? If true what is the proper method? Do I cut off the whole panical or just the flowers on the panicals?
Didn’t get any mangos off this tree last year but the ones I got in 2017 were amazing. I really want a crop this year!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nani dai vs lessors Thai sugar apple
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:33:37 AM »
Looking for a little help. I have a lessard Thai sugar apple tree and is quite nice, my local Walmart is selling Na dai sugar apple trees. I can’t find any description of the na dai on line. Only that is a type of sugar apple. Is it the same as the lessard Thai? If not what are the differences.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / To many sugar apples
« on: July 21, 2019, 06:14:32 PM »
Only my 2nd year getting sugar apples, hand pollinated some last  year and got about 6. Didn’t hand pollinate any this year and have several short branches with 5 or 6 or more on them. Some look smaller. Do I need to thin out my sugar apple tree? Never heard that before?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / LZ mango pest co trol
« on: July 18, 2019, 10:40:42 PM »
I have over 20 fruit trees and the only one with a problem is my LZ mango, has aphids like crazy that I can’t control and many other things. Lost my whole crop to anthracnose and a hail storm. I grow all trees organically except my citrus that I fertilize organically but I give them Bayer citrus systemic treatments. My city checks on them regularly and will uproot them at first site of issues. Is it ok to use this systemic poison on a mango tree? Those mangos are so good I want this tree to work out.The trees are well cared for, heavily organically fertalized, foliage sprays and bugs or leaves picked at first sign of issues. This tree has so many issues I can’t keep up. I can’t do permaculture do to my neighborhood. If any other suggestions please let me know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why is my mango tree bleeding
« on: March 31, 2019, 07:33:15 AM »
Hoping to get my first CC mangos this year and am worried my tree is sick. I have given it 2 copper sprays this year along with 2 foliage feeding. I check on my trees daily and am very concerned because this come out of no where. Can you tell what this is and how to treat?

Can anybody tell me a nusurey that has a good selection of 30 gallon plus citrus trees. I want to get a satsuma mandarin and a good juicing orange. I live in Brevard fl and the nurtures don’t have any and all said they might get 1-2 of an unknown type in mid to late March. I called a couple in east Orlando and they told me to check Lowe’s and Home Depot. Checking around they might have one large but is normally a grape fruit. Any recommendations please! I’m off work this week and have the time to drive somewhere and hour or so away if needed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango flower question
« on: February 19, 2019, 03:57:07 PM »
My LZ flowered very heavy but only had a few panicals have fruit and have several fruit. I expect to loose many of them since they are on the same panical. As a result of the early flower this yearI think the 38F weather with a lot of rain damaged the flowers.

I am thinking of cutting off all of the panicals now (except those with fruit) to see if I can get a reflush. Is that stupid? I am worried I may get too much new growth and it will cause all of the mangos to drop. What do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anthracnose on mango flowers
« on: February 14, 2019, 05:07:16 AM »
We have been having a lot of rain here in east central Florida and think I have anthracnose on my LZ that is having its first major bloom. I sprayed it heavily with cooper fungicide as with fl CC about a month ago when it had the first signs of flowering. The CC looks great but the flowers haven’t opened yet. So I need to get some more cooper fungicide and spray heavily.
My question is do I spray on the flower panicles in addition to the leaves?
Do I treat the CC different from the LZ since the flowers are just starting to open vs the CC and the LZ is done flowering for the most part?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting on a fence line
« on: January 30, 2019, 06:54:10 PM »
I am unfortunately having a wood fence installed on the south side of my back yard due to some horrible new neighbors the light shouldn’t effect most of my fruit trees as I did not plant them close to the end of the property. Now that I have a defined line I don’t have to worry about a tree going over I would like to plant something along it. I would love to line it with blueberry and raspberry plants but won’t get direct sun in the fall or winter until the sun comes back to the north.
Will these plants do ok along a fence line in this situation?
Will any other fruit bushes do well in this type of sun location?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is a 500W Halogen light too much?
« on: January 15, 2019, 08:16:08 PM »
News has 40F coming thru Sunday am for us, yesterday it said 36F so I started preparing for my mango tress in full bloom right now. The trees are about 9’ tall and about 7’ diameter branches. I have a 10’ pvc setup to wrap plastic around the outside and will put a sheet on top at night. I picked a few 500 watt halogen work light for $10 each at Wally World. These put off so much heat I’m worried they may put out too much heat. I don’t want to buy a timer so want to turn it on before bed at 11pm  since I read under 45 will surely damage the flowers. A good bit seem to be pollinated already and I should get my first good crop of my LZ and my first mangos off of my CC (still haven’t tasted one only read how good they are) since it got some damage last year with a 30F front that come thru last year.

Please let me know if I need to stay up all night turning it on and off or can sleep sound.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / MorBloom on mangos
« on: January 06, 2019, 04:29:50 PM »
I purchased ALaska brand Morbloom 0-10-10 for some of my berry shrubs but couldn't resist using on a few of my fruit trees. It calls for a table spoon or 2 per gallon pending on the vegetable or bush but has no info for fruit tees.

I dumped almost a cup of it per 5 gallon bucket and dumped a full bucket each on 2 mango trees and a 30 gallon potted lychee. I did this about a 3-4 weeks ago. Not sure if it is from the Morbloom or not but almost every branch on my mango tree has started to flower or has a swollen bud that looks to be a flower.

Nothing yet on the potted lychee.

Has anyone ever tried this on fruit trees. I could not find anything at all on google searches as it relates to using this on fruit trees. Could this be bad for the trees???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jack Fruit and planting question
« on: August 28, 2018, 06:57:32 PM »
I bought a grafted 3 gallon jack fruit tree (golden nugget) from the local nursery and have 2 questions. I have heard mixed stories about about them fruiting at all in east central fl. I live in rockledge just on the other side of merritt island so the climate is very similar.
What are my chances it will fruit in a few years? Heard some haven’t fruited in 10 years around here and other after a few years.
I cut an old red cedar tree down and had the roots and trunk ground in a perfect location for this tree. Is it wise to plant a fruit tree on or near a ground root ball?

Please help, looking forward to planting this weekend if your info is ok?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugar apple question
« on: August 18, 2018, 08:03:37 AM »
Got my sugar apple off of the tree, it was spongy soft on the bottom and a little soft around the top. The flavor was nice but the flesh wasn’t very moist and a little gritty. Is that normal or was it under/ over ripe? I expected to be a lot more moist.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fix a bad planting
« on: June 09, 2018, 12:41:22 PM »
I am trying to fix a bad planting of my avacado tree that has been in the ground about 1.5 years. The tree was in a 15 gallon pot. When purchased. I planted at ground level and it has sunk an inch or two. The rain has been above normal here in east central Florida and am worried about root rot although the tree is still healthy.  I started to gently try to dig it up and plant it on a raised bed but the tap root was pretty fat and I looked to be run a long ways. So I now plan to dig a deep trench around the root roots that spread about 2' out in each direction. Then load it with potting soil and a heavey dose of perlite.
Will this work or help?
Is there any better suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Joey avacado tree
« on: June 03, 2018, 02:36:24 PM »
I have a 3.5 year old grafted joey, it was 10 foot tall last year so I topped it to 7.'
This tree looks healthy but only grew up and not out. The diameter is only 1 inch. I have several branches on the tree but none more than 1.5' long. I foalier feed it weekly and give it as much organic fertilizer as it could want.

I've only head bad things about this tree although when I researched before purchase it it said it was great quality.

I plan to wait 1 more year. Am I wasting my time or has anyone had any luck with this tree???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What avacado tree to pair with my joey?
« on: April 01, 2018, 06:18:47 AM »
I am looking to get a 2nd avacado tree to plant next to my joey avacado tree that will support pollination. The joey is about 3+ years old, it flowered heavily and the flowers began to open by February 1. Unfortunately none of the flowers were pollinated. The Joey has a type b flower so I'm guessing I should plant a type a next to it. My closest local nursery have a lula, broaden and Florida hass. My research of the lula says it flowers early but not sure when that might be.

Could anyone tell me the best avacado tree to pair with the Joey? Being in central Florida I would like a variety with some cold heartiness but not very important.

I have 11 fruit trees, peach, avacado lemon, limes cherry,2 mangos, grave sugar apple, lychee. All are awake and flowering or growing. Except my lychee and  a 8' lemon zest 1.5" diameter trunk. That should be doing something, I've feed it plenty of holly-tone, compost tea, and foliage feelings the last month since its been so warm here and the same to all the others. It hasn't budged or have any swollen buds. Very healthy old leaves on it.  All the others have been active for almost a month now. What is going on? The light and wind is very similar for all.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mangos dormant?
« on: February 19, 2018, 07:39:00 PM »
I have 2 mangos from Zill farms one a coconut cream and the other a lemon zest. The coconut cream had 50% frost damage and nothing on the LZ. The CC had leaf buds and sprots all over it a few weeks ago and now has several new leaves. The LZ still shows no signs of any buds or new growth and looks very healthy. It is also full sun where the CC gets partial shade this time of year. I have fed them both compost tea, organic fertilizer ( holly-tone), folk at feeding, and plenty of worm castings since the start of February. They both are young mature trees, about 1.5" to 2" trunk diameter. When will the LZ wake up?? Hoping for a big bloom this spring it's been in the low 80's here for most of the month.
