This plant looks interesting. I have a suriname cherry, which has small 1 cm Fruit, very sweet without resinous taste. Butthe leaves looks different, similar to regular suriname cherry.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Eugenia calycina keeps surprising me!

Great job Miguel! Eugenia calycina is a hardy plant. Which I purchased from you, all plants survived. They tolerate high(35 C) and low (4c or less) temperature without damage. Tolerate the city water and stagnant water does not hurt him.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: E.uniflora - First flowering, at what size?

Hi!

My old red surinam cherry tree at age of 4 flowered. She was 1,5 m tall.  I think it does not depend on the size, but also on the age. First the fruits had horrible taste. But it got better year after year.

Adam, have you ever tried grafting pitangatuba?

Yes very easy.

What kind of rootstock are you use? I think surinam cherry will be good choice. Fast growing and not as sensitive like pitangatuba.

Pitangatuba is really hard plant. Easy to grow. This year in my country(I live in Hungary), has very hot summer since 6 weeks. Temperature rising up to 100 F during the day. Maximum was 105 F (40 Celsius degree)Even at night  the temperature drops below 70 F (21 Celsius degree). As in the tropics. All of the pitangatubas doing well. No leaf burning, no "apoplexy", no growth stops. And very drought tolerant.  All  my pitangatubas grow in pots and I not watered for 3 days. My guavas and loquats almost die, but the pitangatubas were well.  They tolerate city water. Tolerate heavy wind.
Very diverse species. Here is a picture how much: 3 examples, different leaf shape, different growth rate and different growth habit.

Alex!
I have the same problem. You irrigate with city water? If yes, you must forget it. I used
earlier pure city water, but it didn't work. Always had chlorosis problem with my plants (citrus trees and coffee was the worst)  So, i used for few years  "managed" city water. I'll tell you how i make it. First leave the water stand for a day. The chlorine is removed. Second I use vinegar essence for pickling. For 10 liter of water 1 teaspoon vinegar essence. From ph 7,5 to pH 6,8 decreases. And I use always a small amount of general fertilizer + small amount chelated Fe.
I know rainwater would be the best, but unfortunately there is no chance. I almost forgot: if you can't use vinegar essence, you can substitute citric acid. In this case for 10 liter of water 10 gramm citric acid.
This method worked my citrus trees and another acid soil loving plants(coffee, orangeberry)
