Duranta Erecta
« on: October 26, 2019, 12:07:53 AM »

Does anyone have much experience with this climbing vine? It is an odd flavor and you have to pick the spines off, but they’re tasty. The large one is from a cutting and smaller from seed. I find the bluish tinge on the leaves of the seedling unusual. Will it survive a 9b leaning 10a microclimate uncovered?

In a quick search some sites say it's good for zone 8 and above. I also saw cautions that it is poisonous, which is often not true, but be careful. D.

We have several large shrubs here in Nipomo.  Never tried to eat berries, but it is the best attraction for all kinds of butterflies.  Easy to grow from cuttings.  Never damaged here from our frosts.

Wow. The nursery I bought them from said they were fine to eat and offered me a few ripe ones... Which I tried with no issues.

Yeah, careful - they are mildly toxic and even to some pets. Birds eat them with no problem, and because of their growth habit and spikes, the birds down here (mostly mocking birds) move to nest in them.

I didn't know it had a vining form. The plant in your photos doesn't look like D. erecta I am familar with, maybe you had something else that is similar-looking?, though it is a fairly polymorphic plant.
